Senior Healthcare Accountant – Job Description
Overview
The Senior Healthcare Accountant is responsible for overseeing complex accounting functions within a healthcare environment, ensuring accurate financial reporting, regulatory compliance, and adherence to GAAP and healthcare-specific accounting standards. This role partners closely with finance leadership and operational teams to support strategic and regulatory initiatives.
Key Responsibilities
Prepare and review monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements
Ensure compliance with GAAP, Medicare/Medicaid regulations, and healthcare reporting requirements
Manage month-end and year-end close processes, including journal entries and account reconciliations
Analyze financial results and provide variance analysis to leadership
Oversee revenue recognition, patient accounts, and third‑party reimbursement accounting
Assist with cost reporting, audits, and regulatory filings
Support budgeting, forecasting, and financial planning activitiesMaintain internal controls and support SOX or internal audit requirements
Serve as a resource and mentor to junior accounting staff
Collaborate with operations, billing, and compliance teams to resolve accounting issues
Required Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or Finance
CPA preferred
5+ years of progressive accounting experience, including healthcare industry experience
Strong knowledge of GAAP and healthcare reimbursement models
Experience with healthcare accounting systems and ERP platforms
Advanced Excel skills
Preferred Qualifications
Experience in hospital systems, physician practices, or healthcare services organizations
Experience with Medicare/Medicaid cost reports
Prior experience supporting audits in a healthcare environment

Ability to manage multiple priorities and deadlines
Strong communication and collaboration skills
Ability to work independently and lead projects
