Overview Newport News Shipbuilding (NNS) is the largest industrial employer in Virginia and the sole designer, builder, and refueler of U.S. Navy nuclear aircraft carriers and one of two providers of U.S. Navy nuclear submarines. The Role This role requires no prior trades experience; candidates will complete a three‑week, unpaid training program or present a certificate of completion in welding or a directly related field. The program runs Monday through Friday, 7:00 am – 3:30 pm, totaling 120 hours. Successfully completing the program qualifies you to work as a welder on our shipbuilding projects, performing structural and pipe welds for aircraft carriers and submarines.
Responsibilities
Use various welding filler metals and processes, including SMAW, FCAW, GMAW, and GTAW, to perform tack, fillet, and full‑penetration welds on steel foundations and structural joints.
Work in all positions using manual and mechanized techniques while meeting stringent nondestructive testing requirements (visual, ultrasonic, and radiographic inspections).
Participate in certified visual inspection training, fire watch protocols, carbon arcing, and troubleshooting minor welding equipment issues.
Perform tasks in diverse environments—extreme heights on scaffolding and elevated platforms, confined spaces such as tanks, compartments, and voids, and all‑weather outdoor conditions.
Work overtime and shifts as required, maintaining safety, precision, and adaptability at all times.
Must Have
Complete the 3‑week (120‑hour) unpaid program OR present valid certificates of completion or diplomas in welding or a directly related trade field.
Pass a background investigation and drug screen.
Pass a physical agility test and be able to lift at least 40 pounds.
Be able to kneel, squat, crawl, bend, stoop, and climb daily; perform overhead work; work outdoors year‑round; work at extreme heights and in small, confined spaces; be willing to work any shift; and maintain a clean‑shaven face to wear a respirator.
Be available for weekly paychecks, paid holidays, and weekly overtime as needed.
