Job Overview:

This position is responsible for semi-skilled work in a variety of construction, maintenance, and repair assignments involving the use of specialized tools and equipment within the city's water/sewer department. Note: Employee may be required to respond to a disaster, either natural or man-made, to serve the citizens of Statesville and meet the needs of the organization, which may result in the assignment of other duties and take precedence over duties described in this job description. This job description is not intended to be all-inclusive.

Responsibilities

Performs manual and semi-skilled tasks related to construction, repair, and maintenance; cut out streets and driveways; manually excavates; backfills and compacts excavated areas to facilitate repairs.

Locates utilities on the job, digs out utilities manually or by machine.

Performs simple measurements; interprets meter readings; performs routine safety inspections.

Receives parts and materials from warehouse personnel; interacts with utilities customers.

Transports materials, tools, and equipment to and from the job sites; sets up and removes warning signs and traffic control devices.

Operates electronic utility locators, hand and power tools, tampers, jackhammers, fire hydrants, gas monitors, air compressors, pneumatic tools, generators, chainsaws, and front-end loaders.

Based on a checklist, maintains utility vehicles in clean, operating condition.

Maintains truck inventory; maintains clean and safe work area.

Performs other duties as assigned.

Education and/or Experience

High School diploma or GED.

One (1) year of experience using power tools in construction work, building maintenance, or water maintenance.

One (1) year of experience operating and maintaining motorized equipment such as a front-end loader or backhoe.

Requirements

Possession of a valid North Carolina driver's license, or any valid driver's license with ability to obtain a North Carolina driver's license within 60 days of establishing a permanent residence in North Carolina.

Must live within 45 minutes of Statesville for quick response time to emergencies.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Thorough knowledge of construction, maintenance, and repair tasks.

Thorough knowledge in the use of common and specialized hand and power tools.

Thorough knowledge of the safe use, operation, and preventive maintenance of mechanical equipment required in the work.

Knowledge of how to maintain truck inventory and safe work areas.

Knowledge of how to set up jet/vac units and clean and unblock wastewater lines.

Ability to operate a variety of hand tools, power tools, and small equipment.

Ability to operate electronic locators, jackhammers, tampers, fire hydrants, front-end loaders, chainsaws, air compressors, generators, and other equipment.

Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.

Ability to communicate ideas clearly, concisely, and effectively, both orally and in writing.

Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with colleagues, other departments, supervisors, and the public.

Job Related Requirements This position involves heavy work requiring the exertion of 100 pounds of force occasionally, up to 50 pounds of force frequently, and up to 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects. Physical activity related to this position may require the use of fingers and hands, climbing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, reaching, pushing, pulling, lifting, grasping, and repetitive motions; vocal communication is required to express or exchange ideas by means of the spoken word; hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels; visual acuity is required for assembly or fabrication of parts at/within arm's length, operation of machines, motor vehicles, or equipment, determining the accuracy and thoroughness of work, and observing general surroundings and activities.

Working Conditions The employee is subject to indoor and outdoor environmental conditions including extreme heat and cold, vibration, noise, fumes, odors, dust, mists, gases, poor ventilation, oils, cutting fluids, and hazards including work around operating machinery, uneven surfaces, and narrow or confined spaces. Ability to perform manual labor for extended periods, often under unfavorable weather conditions. May be required to work nights, weekends, or during emergency situations.
