About the Role The Line Maintenance Mechanic I performs responsible unskilled and semi-skilled work in the installation, replacement, repair, and maintenance of the Town’s water and sewer lines and related appurtenances. This position works as part of a crew engaged in utility construction and maintenance activities that are essential to delivering safe and reliable water and wastewater services to the community.
Work involves operating construction and maintenance equipment, installing and repairing underground utilities, and performing service connections. Employees in this role work outdoors in varying weather conditions and may be subject to on-call and call-back assignments. Work is performed under regular supervision and evaluated through observation and inspection for adherence to safety practices, instructions, and trade standards.
Operate tapping machines to make water and sewer taps and service connections in accordance with standards
Lay, repair, and replace water and sewer pipes and related facilities
Install, service, and test water meters and meter setters
Operate sewer rodders to clear blockages
Operate front-end loaders, dump trucks, jackhammers, tampers, trenchers, air compressors, boring machines, and other construction equipment
Install hydrants, valves, clamps, meters, and related pipeline apparatus
Set meter boxes and repair or replace fire hydrants
Operate tractors with bush hog attachments to maintain water and sewer easements and rights-of-way
Assist with backfilling and compacting excavation sites
Perform other related duties as required
High School Diploma or GED
Six (6) months of experience in construction-related utility work;
OR
An equivalent combination of education and experience
Special Requirements
Possession of a valid North Carolina Commercial Driver’s License (Class B) or the ability to obtain within 18 months of hire
Tanker endorsement, or the ability to obtain with the CDL, may be required
Ability to work on-call and respond to after-hours emergencies as needed
