Qualifications
High school diploma or GED (P)
Bilingual (Spanish / English) (P)
2 to 3 years of food service experience (P)
Knowledge of food safety standards and proper sanitation practices (R)
Strong teamwork skills with the ability to take instruction and respond positively to supervision (R)
Ability to stand, walk, bend, and perform physical tasks for extended periods (R)
Capable of lifting and moving kitchen equipment and supplies in a safe and efficient manner (R)
Strong communication skills to interact with students, staff, and supervisors (R)

Job Goal To support the Child Nutrition Program by assisting in the preparation, service, and cleanup of nutritious meals in a safe, clean, and welcoming environment, while following food safety standards and providing excellent customer service to students and staff.
Essential Functions / Performance Responsibilities
Assist in preparing and cooking meals based on school nutrition standards
Set up the serving area to ensure meals are ready and accessible to students on time
Serve food accurately and courteously, following portion control and safety guidelines
Maintain cleanliness by sanitizing food prep areas, equipment, and serving tools
Monitor food and supply inventory; report shortages and help with storing deliveries
Support students during mealtimes by providing utensils, opening containers, and responding to basic needs
Ensure food is stored, handled, and served at safe temperatures following health regulations
Clean cafeteria and kitchen areas after service, including wiping tables, sweeping, and dishwashing
Participate in special meal events or programs as assigned by the supervisor
Performs other duties as assigned
Efficiently operate the (POS) Point of Sale system to process student meal payments.
Provide excellent customer service with a positive attitude when interacting with students, parents, and staff during meal service
Prepare cash and checks for deposit in a timely manner, ensuring full compliance with district guidelines and policies
Track student meal counts and ensure all required documentation is completed accurately and on time
Ability to follow written and verbal instructions accurately, including recipes, portion guidelines, and safety procedures
Strong attention to detail to ensure proper food preparation, correct portioning, and accurate cashier transactions
Basic math skills for inventory counting, price calculations, and handling cash register transactions
Effective communication skills to interact respectfully and positively with students, coworkers, and supervisors
Ability to stay focused and organized while performing repetitive tasks throughout the shift
A willingness to adapt to changes in menus, staffing, or meal counts with flexibility and a team-focused attitude.
Physical Demands
Frequent standing, walking, bending, and reaching
Ability to lift and carry up to 30-40 pounds of food supplies and kitchen equipment
Capable of performing repetitive tasks in a fast-paced environment, such as lifting trays, washing dishes, and organizing food items
Work Environment
Work is performed in a school kitchen and cafeteria setting
Environment may be noisy, fast-paced, and high-energy, especially during meal service times
Regular exposure to heat from cooking equipment, food odors, and occasional use of cleaning chemicals
Ability to work in a noisy, high-energy environment with large groups of children
Terms of Employment This is a 10-month classified hourly position. Salary is based upon the Classified Hourly Placement Schedule as established by the Governing Board. Employee benefits in accordance with Board policies. 35 hours a week.
Evaluation This job's performance will be evaluated in accordance with Board policy on personnel evaluation.
