The ETSU College of Nursing, Office of Practice, invites applications for a PRN (temporary) Billing/Collections Specialist position. The Billing/Collections Specialist processes and posts insurance/patient payments and generates billing statements. The level of responsibility and compensation will be commensurate with the candidate's experience and qualifications.
Billing/Collections Specialist – Level 4 (Billing and Collections II) The responsibilities include:
Review charges for correct coding and forward to Billing Company.
Ensure required documentation for participation in third‑party payment incentive programs is provided.
Process and post all payment types in the electronic practice management/health records system.
Generate and mail billing statements from the electronic practice management/health records system.
Answer telephone and in‑person inquiries regarding explanation of benefit documents, charges, payments, adjustments, and amounts due.
Ensure accuracy of information in the electronic practice management/health records system.
Train and supervise student workers.
Identify coding irregularities within the electronic practice management/health records system.
Perform other duties as assigned.
Billing/Collections Specialist – Level 3 (Billing & Collections Specialist I) The responsibilities include:
Process and post insurance payments in the electronic practice management/health records system.
Process and post patient payments in the electronic practice management/health records system.
Answer telephone and other inquiries and route to appropriate personnel.
Train and supervise student workers.
Identify coding irregularities within the electronic practice management/health records system.
Provide training related to coding errors.
Perform other duties as assigned.
This position MAY have the potential to become a regular full‑time position.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Billing and Collections II, Level 4
Knowledge of the medical billing and collections revenue cycle and ability to recognize data trends and recommend adjustments and implement appropriate changes to our processes.
Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to align tasks and responsibilities with appropriate team members.
Knowledge of insurance and medical billing.
Knowledge of Medicare and Medicaid billing regulations.
Knowledge of coding for claims, coding certification.
Knowledge of HIPAA Privacy and Security.
Efficient with Microsoft Office programs, specifically Excel.
Ability to communicate effectively, orally and in writing.
Ability to solve problems and work with a team.
Billing & Collections Specialist I, Level 3
Knowledge of insurance and medical billing.
Knowledge of Medicare and Medicaid billing regulations.
Knowledge of coding for claims, coding certification.
Knowledge of HIPAA Privacy and Security.
Efficient with Microsoft Office programs, specifically Excel.
Ability to communicate effectively, orally and in writing.

Required Qualifications Billing & Collections Specialist II, Level 4
High school diploma or equivalent.
Three (3) to four (4) years of experience in medical office billing and coding.
Three (3) years of experience with electronic health records (EHR) system.
Three (3) years of experience with insurance claims processing.
Billing & Collections Specialist, Level 3
High school diploma or equivalent.
One (1) to two (2) years of experience in medical office billing and coding.
One (1) year of billing functions on electronic health records (EHR) system.
One (1) year of experience with insurance claims processing.
Preferred Qualifications Certified Professional Coding (CPC) Certification or Certified Revenue Cycle Representative (CRCR) certification.
Compensation & Benefits Billing and Collections Specialist II, Level 4 Job Family: Medical Clinical Associate 2 Market Range 4 - $18.88/hour.
Billing & Collections Specialist I, Level 3 Job Family: Medical Clinical Associate 1 Market Range 3 - $16.71/hour
