Job Summary
Transportation Operator II – Part‑time position operating roadway maintenance equipment in Virginia Department of Transportation locations (Fairystone, Patrick Springs, AHQ, Peters Creek AHQ). Minimum salary $18.97, maximum $30.82 per hour. Holds a CDL and DOT medical card; required to comply with VDOT policies.
Responsibilities
Operate and maintain light, medium and heavy‑duty highway equipment for maintenance, construction and emergency operations.
Perform preventive maintenance, repairs and routine inspections on vehicles and equipment.
Provide traffic control, detours and lane closures using MUTCD standards.
Clear roadways of snow, ice, debris, and accident cleanup; provide traffic control during emergencies.
Use hand and power tools for manual labor tasks; participate as a crew member in all phases of projects.
Maintain a clean, orderly and safe work environment; follow VDOT safety regulations and practices.
Qualifications
Valid CDL, DOT medical card and ability to maintain status within 11 months of employment.
Heavy manual labor capability and safety shoes required.
Proficiency with hand and power tools, light and heavy duty equipment, and roadway maintenance procedures.
Ability to read and follow written and verbal instructions; competent in documentation and inventory records.
Knowledge of MUTCD, traffic control devices, safety regulations, and roadway equipment.
Additional Considerations
Training or experience in maintenance, construction or related field is preferred.
Experience in preventive maintenance and minor equipment repairs is desirable.
Skills in emergency operations for snow removal, storms, and accident cleanup are valued.
Knowledge of federal and state regulations regarding traffic control devices is advantageous.

Physical Requirements Must perform manual labor and operate equipment in diverse weather and road conditions.
