Job Description The Department of City Planning ensures the highest quality of life for present and future generations by providing excellent planning and enforcement services emphasizing the development of safe, healthy and fun communities where people choose to live, work and play.

Essential Functions

Process electrical, plumbing, mechanical, and other permits by reviewing the scope of work to be performed, examining permit applications for accuracy, verifying and obtaining information to complete applications, inputting information into a computerized system, and determining permit fees.

Provide extensive customer service while assisting patrons in the completion of permit applications. Approve applications and issue permits.

Coordinate and expedite the construction permit issuance process by distributing applications, assisting customers in the completion of applications and prioritizing and assigning submitted building plans to the appropriate staff.

Provide information to applicants, including architects, engineers, builders, contractors, and homeowners, about the permit issuance process.

Assist in resolving issues and answering questions related to permit applications, fees, plans and specifications submitted.

Perform related administrative duties including receiving, stamping, recording, and monitoring the digital storage, assignment and scanning plans and documents into Archive Laserfiche Digital storage.

Process requests for temporary certificate of occupancy (TCO) and Certificate of Occupancy (CO) when requested by applicant and authorized by the Building Official (or Deputy or Team Leader).

Education / Experience Work requires knowledge necessary to understand basic operational, technical, or office processes. Level of knowledge equivalent to four years of high school or equivalency.

Required

One year of experience in the building or construction trades; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Additional Information & Requirements

Valid Driver's License required.

Certification from the State of Virginia as a Permit Technician within 18 months of appointment.

Work Schedule

Monday – Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
