Description Accountant I – Continuous Post (2026) – entry‑level professional accountant who applies accounting principles and practices to a limited range of accounting, budgeting, and/or other fiscal functions, working under general supervision.

Examples of Duties

Reconciles reports and bank statements, noting apparent errors or inconsistencies.

Examines accounting records, financial statements, or other financial reports to assess accuracy, completeness, and conformance to reporting and procedural standards.

Reviews and approves documents such as vouchers, requisitions and billing authorizations.

Maintains appropriation and other subsidiary ledgers.

Prepares financial statements and reports.

Closes account books.

Routinely manages and reconciles cash accounts.

Prepares fiscal reports and assists with fiscal administration of grants and contracts.

Assists in reconciliation of fixed assets.

Assists higher level accountants in evaluation, implementation, and operation of automated accounting systems.

Assists in financial analysis procedures.

May supervise lower level staff.

Processes payroll.

Performs other related duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Any one or any combination of the following, totalling three (3) years (36 months):

Work experience and/or training in Accounting or a closely related field.

College coursework and/or training in Accounting or a closely related field (including 12 semester hours in accounting).

Equivalent of 36 months through higher education:

30 semester hours equals one (1) year (12 months).

Associate’s Degree (60 semester hours) equals eighteen months (18 months).

90 semester hours equals two (2) years (24 months).

Bachelor’s Degree (120 semester hours) equals three (3) years (36 months).

Supplemental Information Illinois Residency Requirement:

Out‑of‑state candidates must establish Illinois residency within 180 calendar days of the start date.
