Network Engineer Location: Fair Lakes, Virginia

Contract Type: Contract, temp to perm

Contractor Work Model: Hybrid

Responsibilities

Operate, maintain, and troubleshoot network connectivity and infrastructure on all Mission Technologies networking equipment.

Support the operation and maintenance of multiple networks across different classification levels and environments, ensuring continuous network connectivity for customers and sites.

Troubleshoot network connectivity issues including WAN circuits, equipment failures, router and switch configurations, and firewall access control lists.

Apply network security best practices and perform security patching.

Coordinate with commercial circuit providers for implementation and troubleshooting, and maintain Information Assurance compliance, including IOS upgrades, network device configuration changes, and firewall ACL verification and changes.

Support remote sites in restoring network failures.

Maintain smooth operation of local area networks, wide area networks, and virtual private networks (VPN).

Plan, evaluate, and coordinate the installation and/or reconfiguration of hardware and software elements of data and/or voice communication networks.

Maintain technical expertise in all areas of networks and computer hardware and software interconnection and interfacing, such as routers, multiplexers, firewalls, hubs, bridges, gateways, etc.

Propose network solutions to management to meet current and future communications requirements, optimizing cost savings.

Prepare or ensure appropriate network documentation exists, including operational instructions.

Provide regular monitoring and network analysis regarding short- and long-range planning for in-house systems.

Coordinate third-party maintenance for network equipment.

Design network or portion of network, including selection of hardware and software packages.

Qualifications

5+ years of relevant experience in network operations and support.

Demonstrated hands‑on experience in network operations and on‑site support.

Proven experience providing direct site support, including physical infrastructure management and on‑premises troubleshooting.

Experience with remote and on‑site network installations and upgrades.

Must currently hold, or be able to obtain and maintain, a US Secret security clearance.

Preferred Requirements

CCNP Certification or equivalent.

Multi‑cloud network configuration experience.

Installation and troubleshooting of WAN and LAN network equipment and circuits.

Strong experience with Palo Alto Firewalls.

Ability to troubleshoot network issues at the protocol/packet level using sniffers, protocol analyzers, NetFlow, logging, etc.

Strong technical network troubleshooting and critical thinking skills.

Strong knowledge of Cisco internetworking: IP addressing, switching (VTP, VLANs, 802.1q), routing (OSPF, EIGRP, BGP, PIM, multicast), and Cisco IOS.

Strong knowledge of Fortinet internetworking: IP addressing, switching (VTP, VLANs, 802.1q), routing (OSPF, EIGRP, BGP, PIM, multicast), and Fortinet IOS.

Knowledge of IP networking fundamentals, OSI model, and frame/packet structure.

Experience in a network operations environment, including help desk, customer communication, trouble ticketing, and issue resolution.

Experience with network and performance monitoring tools (SolarWinds, etc.).

Experience with network security technologies: firewalls, VRFs, port‑security/802.1x.

Familiarity with Cisco VoIP, including PoE switches and Call Manager.

Willingness to work periodic shifted schedules, including evenings, nights, and weekends.
