Corrections Officer Trainee - State Correctional Institution at Albion
Join the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania as a Corrections Officer Trainee at the State Correctional Institution (SCI) at Albion.
Position Description The trainee will complete a five‑week formal training program and then perform duties under the supervision of a corrections officer. Work includes the care, custody, control, and non‑professional counseling of inmates, ensuring the safety of the institution and its residents.
Responsibilities
Direct and indirect contact with inmates and visitors.
Maintain security in all institutional areas by monitoring inmate movement and activities.
Conduct periodic and unannounced rounds, head counts, and security checks, reporting any unusual activity.
Work a 40‑hour week with scheduled shifts; overtime, weekend, holiday, and adverse weather work may be required.
Respond to emergency situations and use physical force when necessary.
Participate in instruction in sociology, psychology, court procedures, self‑defense, leadership, custodial responsibilities, and facility structure.
Assist inmates in adjusting to correctional processes and the Department’s rules.
Prepare written reports.
Qualifications
PA residency requirement waived for this title.
Successful completion of basic training in Elizabethtown, PA required.
Ability to perform essential job functions.
Legal Requirements
Pass a background investigation and meet CJIS compliance requirements.
Complete a medical examination, psychological evaluation, and drug urinalysis screening.
Benefits
Starting hourly rate $22.97 with up to $1.25 shift differential.
Full‑time employment, eligibility for full retirement benefits at age 50 or 55.
Union position subject to collective bargaining agreement.
