Job Summary Provides technical scrub skills in the operating room during surgical procedures and assists the surgical team as needed in any other capacity, according to established procedures. Must be energetic and highly motivated to support the success of Saint Louis University Hospital.

Job Responsibilities and Requirements

Essential Functions (70%)

Demonstrates professionalism when working.

Performs care for patient safety and well‑being.

Able to scrub any procedure in primary cluster skillfully.

Able to operate all equipment in primary cluster.

Demonstrates ability to operate computer by correct data entry.

Follows established standards of practice.

Demonstrates flexibility.

Demonstrates knowledge and participates in specialty area.

Maintains certification when appropriate.

Collaboration (10%)

Cooperates with other personnel to achieve department and interdepartmental objectives, and maintain good employee relations.

Cooperates with other departments and their needs in the interest of patient care.

Works closely with ACU and PACU, and attempts to assist them when requested.

Safety / Infection Control (5%)

Practices universal precautions and disposes of hazardous wastes per established guidelines.

Maintains a safe, clean, comfortable and therapeutic environment for patients, families, and employees in accordance with hospital standards.

Maintains clutter‑free environment, keeps conversations and background noise to a minimum, adheres to dress code, reports risk‑management concerns.

Completes annual mandatory requirements: Safety/Fire, Blood‑borne Pathogen, Hazardous Communication, TB, Department Specific, Age‑Appropriate Care.

Works in a constant state of alertness and safe manner.

Service Excellence (10%)

Demonstrates care and courtesy.

Provides prompt, respectful, courteous service.

Meets physical, spiritual, psychological, and emotional needs of patients and families.

Responds to patient needs promptly, apologizes for mix‑ups or delays, communicates effectively and maintains confidentiality.

Listens to patient/family concerns, addresses needs, explains procedures and education in a manner that patients understand.

Allows time for questions, demonstrates competence and collaboration, provides accurate report, delivers high‑quality care in accordance with standards.

Shares knowledge with other departments to facilitate workflow and continuity.

Provides cost‑effective services, uses resources wisely, and recommends changes in practice that increase efficiency while minimizing waste.

Minimizes overtime and utilizes time well.

Performance Improvement (5%)

Participates in discussion of PI outcomes.

Collects PI data as assigned.

Participates in research activities.

Age‑Appropriate Care Provides age‑appropriate care to infants, children, adolescents, adults, and geriatrics. Specific duties include:

Ensures safety by following age‑appropriate safety measures.

Communicates effectively using age‑appropriate techniques.

Involves family or significant other in decision‑making.

Demonstrates ability to provide required services for each age group routinely served.

Attends annual age‑specific in‑service.

Job Specifications Minimum Education:

High school graduate or equivalent preferred.

Minimum Experience:

Either prior OR experience or graduation from an approved surgical technician program preferred.

Required Registry or License:

Certified Surgical Technologist (CST).

Working Conditions:

Must be able to travel to and between operating rooms at a rapid pace. May be required to wear protective clothing such as masks, gowns, and gloves in addition to adhering to the department dress code. Regularly exposed to risk of blood‑borne disease. Must be able to work with electrical equipment. May be exposed to hot/cold materials and chemical agents. May be exposed to latex. Must be able to work alone, with others, and around others. Must have good organization, planning, reasoning, judgment, problem solving, and safety awareness skills.

Physical Requirements:

Tolerate prolonged sitting, standing, and walking. Transfer adult patients who require maximum assistance. Carry equipment and supplies. Push/maneuver wheelchair, stretcher, OR table, etc. Tolerate reaching, bending, kneeling. Read and write. Communicate information appropriately. Manual dexterity and mobility. Tolerate intermittent exertion when assisting in surgery. Lift 50 pounds and push/pull 100 pounds.

Required Professional License And/Or Certifications

Basic Life Support HealthCare Provider (BLS HCP) – American Heart Association (AHA)

Certified Surgical Technologist (CST) – National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting (NBSTSA)

Tech in Surgery – Certified – National Center for Competency Testing (NCCT)

National Registered Surgical Technician (NRST) – American Allied Health Association (AAH)
