Hearing Impaired Interpreter

Job Code: SE-124 Job Grade: RN/04 (Provisional), RN/05 (Permitted), RN/06 (Licensed) Job Goal: To facilitate communication amongst hearing impaired students, hearing peers, teachers, and others by providing interpretation services to assist in students' ability to learn subject matter, and achieve successful educational outcomes. Reports To: Principal as assigned Supervises: None Essential Duties and Responsibilities: Provides interpretation services in both classroom and non-classroom settings, using American Sign Language (ASL), for the purpose of presenting and/or reinforcing learning concepts. Attends Individual Education Program (IEP) meetings and collaborates with IEP team members for the purpose of evaluating, recommending, and implementing appropriate IEP goals, accommodations, treatments, and services for each student. Meets with teachers and other HCS faculty as needed to discuss relevant curriculum and lesson plan information for the purpose of ensuring effective preparation and interpretation. Alerts appropriate personnel concerning any special problems or observations related to students' needs to assist teachers and other HCS faculty in evaluating students' progress. Interprets at various meetings, conferences, appointments, educational activities, and school functions as requested for the purpose of conveying information to hearing impaired participants. Serves as a liaison for the Huntsville City School System to promote good public relations between the hearing impaired, hearing peers, staff, and faculty members. Participates in a variety of approved trainings, activities, and events, including in-service programs, seminars, conferences, workshops, etc. for professional development purposes. Performs other job-related duties as assigned. Qualifications: A high school diploma and current interpreters license from the AL State Board of Interpreters with at least two (2) years of experience in the interpretation of American Sign Language (ASL). Physical Requirements: Requires light work exerting up to ten (10) pounds of force occasionally and/or a negligible amount of force frequently. Job involves sitting most of the time. Terms of Employment: Nine month year. Salary as recommended by the Superintendent and approved by the Board.
