Job Responsibilities

Performs periodic shop, yard, building, work zone, equipment, environmental, etc. inspections to ensure compliance with appropriate state and federal health, safety and environmental regulations.

Conducts unannounced SCDOT Work Zone inspections of crews to determine proper compliance and guidelines are met according to the SCDOT Work Zone Maintenance Manual and MUTCD. This includes ensuring all employees are wearing required personal protective equipment and all on-site documentation has been properly and correctly completed.

The county safety representative has authority to stop/shut down any and all unsafe activity until deficiencies are corrected.

Instructs/facilitates all Anderson and other counties employees in required health and safety courses including but not limited to CPR/First Aid, Flagger, Fall Protection, Excavation and Trenching, etc.

Investigates employee injuries and vehicle/equipment accidents for Anderson and other counties to determine cause and make recommendations for improving safety and accident prevention in the future.

Prepares all necessary paperwork, reports and Risk Management data entry including but not limited to OSHA 300/300's as required by Worker's Compensation and fleet management.

Monitors organizational units CDL operations for compliance with federal, state and Agency requirements.

Assists with CDL training in Anderson County and other areas in the districts as required.

Conducts monthly Safety meetings for Anderson and other counties and ensures all employees receive necessary material in a timely manner.

Advises organizational leadership of uncorrected safety deficiencies and recommends methods of correction.

Performs necessary assistance needed in Anderson and other counties with the Drug and Alcohol Program (i.e. Post-Accident, Pre-employment, random) etc.

Serves as witness in hearings resulting from investigations as required.

Performs other related duties as assigned.

Minimum and Additional Requirements

A high school diploma and two (2) years of experience in occupational safety or industrial hygiene programs. A bachelor's degree in public health or a related field may substitute for the required work experience.

A valid Class "A" Commercial Driver's License. (NOTE): This position requires a valid Class "A" Commercial Driver's License within six (6) months of placement in the position.

Physical Requirement: The physical demands for the essential functions of this position involve bending, stooping, reaching, twisting, climbing, balancing, kneeling, pushing, pulling, and grasping. Must be able to lift up to 50 lbs. This position requires walking for extended periods, treading rough and uneven terrain, and working in close proximity to motoring traffic and natural environmental hazards. This position requires working in an office environment, warehouse environment, and/or outside in all weather conditions. May be required to work outside of normal work schedule, especially during inclement weather and/or other departmental-related emergencies. Requires travel as needed, and assigned.
