Job Summary:
Providing both emergency and non‑emergency transport of patients. Empress EMT’s & Paramedics will collaborate with direct supervisors, Municipal & County Fire, Police departments as well as other medical staff, patients and family members. To provide the highest level of patient care and customer service. At the direction of the Operations Department, the EMT will perform or assist with a wide variety of patient care activities in both the pre‑hospital and hospital setting. The EMT is expected to provide supportive and definitive care to the patient or group of patients. The EMT will provide care in the emergency setting as well as during inter‑facility transportation.
Requirements for Employment:
Current New York State Certification (EMT‑B) and current CPR Certification, maintained at all times.
A valid Driver’s License and a clean driving record that meets insurance carrier underwriting guidelines.
Negative drug test as required by Empress Ambulance Service.
Complete all aspects of the pre‑employment process, including drug screening, background check and CPAT.
Probationary period of 180 days.
Work Environment:
Works outdoors and indoors with occasional exposure to hazardous conditions, blood/body fluids, fumes/odors, and temperature changes. Requires respirator use and exposure to noise, mechanical and electrical equipment. Performs shift work and operates in mobile and confined areas.
Job Description – Main Duties:
Assess, plan, implement and evaluate patient care within the scope of established protocols and the current standard of care.
Provide accurate and pertinent written documentation of all patient care and EMS responses.
Complete all required Empress and NYS paperwork.
Maintain all patient care equipment, vehicles, supplies, daily logs and patient care records as directed by the company.
Operate Empress vehicles and equipment per company policy, maintaining a safe work environment.
Report to work on time; understand that the EMT’s assigned shift may exceed its scheduled end time and overtime may be assigned.
Accept any of the available shifts as part of normal duties.
Follow all Empress policies and procedures.
Attend mandatory continuing medical education, updates and staff meetings as required by Empress.
Comply with guidelines for uniform dress and equipment regulations.
Assist in public information and educational programs promoting EMT services.
Perform physical tasks such as lifting up to 150 pounds unassisted and up to 300 pounds with a two‑person crew; use hands, arms and other physical abilities as required.
Provide appropriate medical care to patients with communicable diseases following New York State Department of Health EMS Bureau recommendations.
Remain prepared to encounter violent or abusive patients and take necessary safety steps.
Perform other duties as assigned or outlined in the Empress Employee Manual.
Company Assigned Duties (EMT‑B):
Accurate written documentation of PCR and requested reports.
Completion of daily vehicle inspection, equipment check and daily log.
Restock all used medical and trauma supplies.
Proper use of radio, cellular and other communication devices.
Maintain a clean, safe work environment in company vehicles and stations.
Clinical Skills:
Rapid, thorough patient care history and physical exam.
Prioritization of care.
Patient interview.
BLS assessment.
Oral suctioning.
Oral airways.
BVM ventilation.
Oxygen administration.
BCLS CPR administration.
Use of semi‑automatic defibrillator.
Spinal motion restriction and immobilization when required.
Use of extrication devices.
Traction and splinting.
Emergency childbirth.
Triage of multiple casualties.
Familiarization with Incident Command System.
Crisis intervention and other communication skills.
Operation of vehicle safely in emergency and non‑emergency mode.
Continuing Education Requirements:
Maintain EMT certification and attend NYS rectification classes as needed.
Current BCLS certification.
Attend company in‑service/updates as required.
