Billing Specialist
Location: East Hartford, CT
Full‑time position with a standard schedule Monday – Friday, 8:00 AM to 4:30 PM (with one late shift until 6:00 PM). Hourly range $18.00 – $24.00.

Key Responsibilities
Prepare and submit billing data and medical claims to insurance companies
Ensure accurate patient information and up‑to‑date medical records
Maintain billing software, update rate changes, and generate financial reports
Resolve billing discrepancies and appeal denied claims
Assess financial summaries and spot discrepancies for accurate billing
Prioritize tasks, stay organized, and meet deadlines
Verify insurance payments for accuracy and compliance with contract discounts
Contact insurance companies regarding payment discrepancies when necessary
Identify and bill secondary or tertiary insurances
Answer patients’ billing and insurance inquiries and handle complaints
Review accounts for possible assignment and recommend to Billing Supervisor, and prepare information for the collection agency
Maintain strict confidentiality; adhere to HIPAA guidelines and regulations
Process claims and follow up with insurance companies
Review patient bills for accuracy and completeness and obtain missing information
Follow up on unpaid claims within the standard cycle timeframe
Review, research, and respond to correspondence from insurance companies, attorneys, and patients
Contact patients as needed to collect appropriate information or collect balances
Identify, verify, and document account adjustments per policy and procedures
Ensure service level and productivity requirements are met related to reimbursement, resolution, and response to inquiries
Maintain positive working relationships with internal and external customers by providing superior customer service
Utilize medical and billing terminology
Adhere to Clean Claims Act and HIPAA policy and procedures
Minimum Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
Accounting knowledge; math skills
Medical and billing terminology
Electronic Health Records (EHR) and electronic billing
270/271 and 835/837
Experience & Training
College level education in Accounting, Finance, Medical Billing, or Healthcare (can be substituted with work experience)
Graduate of an Accredited Medical Assistant Program
2+ years of billing/collections experience in a healthcare or insurance environment
Desired Experience
Experience with ICD‑9/10 and CPT coding
Knowledge of healthcare carriers and payer requirements
Familiarity with billing software like eClinicalWorks
Requirements
Must be vaccinated against COVID‑19 (exemptions may apply)
Must pass a drug test, including testing for marijuana
