Position Specific Description The Network Operations Department is seeking a Meteorologist – Data Analyst to join our team in West Palm Beach, FL. This role is critical in managing all meteorological aspects for Distribution Operations, including data acquisition, forecast preparation and communication, and oversight of external weather vendors to support storm planning, restoration, and mitigation efforts.
The ideal candidate will possess deep expertise in meteorological processes related to lightning, precipitation, wind, and tropical cyclones across time scales ranging from minutes to seasons. This position also provides meteorological support to other areas of FPL, including temperature forecasting for load projections, post-event analysis for legal matters, forecasts for NextEra assets, and specialized climatological analyses. The successful candidate will help establish state-of-the-art meteorological programs that drive industry-leading reliability.
This is a full-time, in-office position requiring flexibility and availability outside normal business hours during storm events.
Key Responsibilities
Develop and deliver daily weather forecasts to support Distribution Operations and restoration efforts.
Collaborate with Distribution Operations and Emergency Preparedness teams to create tropical cyclone impact assessments and resource allocation recommendations.
Conduct applied meteorological research to improve forecast accuracy and decision-making; stay current with advancements in the field.
Design, build, and validate analytical models and workflows to extract patterns and signals from complex weather data.
Document forecast processes, model performance, and post-event verification for continuous improvement.
Produce and present live and recorded weather broadcasts using WSI Max software as needed.
Maintain availability outside normal business hours and for extended periods during storm events to assist restoration efforts.
Provide additional meteorological support, including:
Executive briefings
Temperature forecasting for load projections
Post-event analysis for legal matters
Forecasts for company assets
Special climatological analyses
Perform other job-related duties as assigned.
Preferred Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in Meteorology, Atmospheric Science, or a related field (Master’s degree preferred).
7+ years in operational meteorology.
Technical Expertise
Proficiency in forecasting at mesoscale, synoptic, and sub-seasonal scales.
Strong ability to evaluate weather models, identify biases, and translate data into actionable insights.
Advanced knowledge of tropical cyclone forecasting.
Familiarity with Python and exposure to machine learning, deep learning, and AI-based modeling techniques.
Skills
Exceptional communication skills with the ability to convey complex meteorological concepts to decision-makers.
Excellent written and oral communication abilities.
Knowledge of Florida-specific mesoscale convective patterns.
Commitment to continuous technical development and skill enhancement.

Provides weather forecasting for travel teams
