Job Summary The Student Associate is a key member of the Career Education Center (CEC) team, serving as the first point of contact for students, faculty, staff, and visitors to campus. This role is a combination of customer service and operational support. Student Associates help create a welcoming environment by checking in students and alumni for appointments, answering the phone, scheduling appointments, and sharing resources while also working on department operations such as Handshake maintenance, data entry, and social media. All work is performed at the front desk. The Student Associate reports to the Program Assistant. After initial training, the Student Associate will independently staff the front desk during the Program Assistant’s lunch break (a one-hour period within the 12:00 pm – 2:00 pm window). Each shift typically includes time before or after lunch for check‑in and transition, usually an additional 15 to 30 minutes.
This role will provide the opportunity to develop the following Career Readiness Competencies: Oral & Written Communication, Digital Literacy, and Teamwork & Leadership.
Work Schedule: 2-4 hours per week during the academic year. Must be available for a minimum of 2 days a week during the 12:00 pm – 2:00 pm time frame for a minimum of 1.25 hours to cover the desk during the Program Assistant’s lunch. Preference will be given to students with availability on Tuesday and Thursday. Additional hours may be scheduled based on needs and availability.
Core Duties
Serve as the first point of contact and greet and assist visitors in a welcoming and professional manner.
Communicate about Career Education Center services, resources, and events in-person and over the phone.
Provide information about relevant resources including the website, handouts, and Handshake.
Check in clients and schedule appointments in Handshake.
Answer and direct phone calls; take and relay messages to staff.
Conduct daily reminder calls for upcoming appointments.
Attend monthly all‑staff meetings and contribute to team discussions.
Support social media and marketing efforts.
Approve jobs and internships in Handshake.
Identify jobs and internships in Handshake to promote on social media.
Assist with data entry, employer research, projects, and department events.
After onboarding, complete optional projects such as working at CEC events, Handshake research, and more depending on skills and interests. Projects could be assigned by professional staff or self‑initiated with the support of professional staff.

Ability to answer the phone and direct calls.
Knowledge of Microsoft Office (primarily Word, Excel, Outlook, and Teams) and the ability to learn new software tools.

Capable of handling questions and concerns in a calm and positive manner.
Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
Ability to take instruction and clearly communicate work/project progress.
Ability to work independently and in a team environment.
Willing to take initiative and work on a variety of projects.
Must be reliable and communicative about any time conflicts that may arise.
Preferred Qualifications
Available during the lunch hour (Monday – Friday, 12:00 pm – 2:00 pm), with preference given to applicants available Tuesday and Thursday.
