Van Driver – St. Mary's County
STATUS:
Part time, split shift, 6:30 am–9:30 am and 1:30 pm–4:30 pm
SALARY:
$20–$21 per hour (actual pay based on skills and experience)
Job Purpose To provide reliable, safe and courteous transportation service to the individuals supported by The Arc of Southern Maryland. The Van Driver serves as a communication link between those individuals, families, and staff while operating the assigned vehicle(s) in accordance with all applicable traffic laws and regulations.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Operate assigned vehicle safely and courteously.
Maintain defensive driving habits.
Assist passengers in and out of the vehicle; operate ramps, lifts, and tie‑down devices as necessary.
Read and interpret maps and driving directions to plan the most efficient route for passengers and read road signs in English.
Keep the vehicle(s) clean inside and outside.
Perform minor maintenance tasks on assigned vehicle(s) as required.
Fuel the vehicle(s).
Respond immediately to accidents or medical emergencies by notifying emergency responders and rendering first aid until professionals arrive.
Provide support to consumers as needed.
Identify and intervene in crisis situations, and contact necessary supports.
Monitor crisis situations, discuss incidents with authorized staff and individuals, adjust supports and the environment, and comply with reporting regulations.
Implement behavior plans as indicated.
Documentation
Maintain accurate records and submit them to appropriate sources promptly.
Maintain confidentiality and ethical standards.
Keep up‑to‑date records on trip sheets, transportation forms, vehicle maintenance, fuel purchases, incident reports, accident reports, and vehicle condition reports.
Organization Participation
Follow all agency guidelines, procedures, and practices, ensuring a smoke‑free, cell‑phone‑free, and noise‑reduced environment for passengers.
Incorporate sensitivity to cultural, religious, racial, disability, and gender issues into daily interactions.
Education, Training & Self‑Development
Attend, complete, and pass all required training, initially and ongoing.
Additional Duties and Responsibilities
Perform all tasks appropriately assigned or requested.
Demonstrate appropriate role‑model behavior.
Attend and participate in staff and team meetings.
Contribute to program evaluations by responding to surveys, interviews, or discussion groups.
Accept and employ the agency's core values.
Education and Experience
Graduation from an accredited high school or GED.
Three years of driving experience; CDL license preferred but not required.
Adequate vision and hearing to supervise passengers and recognize emergency vehicles.
Job Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Proficiency in computer‑based software (Excel, Word, Access).
Able to drive a multi‑passenger vehicle safely and read road signs in English.
Effective oral and written communication skills.
Ability to establish professional relationships with passengers, families, and coworkers.
Ability to prepare concise and accurate records and reports.
Extensive knowledge of vehicle operations and features.
Recognize vehicle maintenance needs and perform minor repairs.
Reasoning skills to interpret policies, maps, and route directions; administer first aid and CPR.
Valid Maryland driver’s license and pass DOT physical.
Pass sworn criminal background check mandated by the State of Maryland.
Americans with Disabilities Specifications (Physical Demands) Representative physical demands: occasionally walk, sit for prolonged periods, use hands and arms to handle or feel objects, reach, climb stairs, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl; talk or hear; taste or smell. Hearing required: hear and respond to requests and disturbances in the van and hear approaching emergency or police vehicles.
Work Environment Employee may be exposed to weather conditions while loading/unloading the van or while driving. Noise level usually moderate.
