General Description Leads and behaves according to Potbelly Values. Develops and manages people to deliver outstanding product quality and customer service, build sales, and control costs for each shift. Assistant Managers exercise judgment and discretion regarding supervising employees and resolving customer issues. All decisions align with Potbelly operating policies and procedures.
Responsibilities People
Train, coach, and develop Potbelly Associates and Shift Leaders.
Formally evaluate Associate and Shift Leader performance, including completion and sign‑off of appraisals.
Conduct weekly feedback sessions with Associates, Certified Trainers, and Shift Leaders.
Enforce and educate Associates, Certified Trainers, and Shift Leaders on all work rules, personnel policies, labor laws, and security and safety procedures.
Recommend and implement corrective action as needed.
Recommend hiring and retention of Associates, Certified Trainers, and Shift Leaders.
Create a plan to decrease turnover and improve Associate job satisfaction.
Effectively schedule Associates, Certified Trainers, and Shift Leaders.
Update the communication board with critical shop information.
Hold monthly meetings with Associates, Certified Trainers, and Shift Leaders.
Customers
Effectively handle customer complaints.
Maintain advanced standards for raw and finished product quality, service speed, cleanliness, and sanitation.
Assign daily cleaning duties and conduct weekly follow‑ups.
Execute, enforce, and manage all food safety requirements and practices.
Enforce and maintain uniform policy.
Manage back‑of‑house operations to meet standards.
Ensure shop security and safety by following procedures.
Sales
Drive neighborhood shop marketing and promotions to maximize sales potential, including sourcing and blitzing outside the shop for recruiting and marketing purposes.
Profit
Control assigned P & L line items.
Manage food components, labor, waste, and cash across shifts.
Count drawers and ensure proper cash handling procedures.
Update the daily prep sheet weekly.
Maintain all food pars and appropriate inventory; place shop orders using SMS and other data sources.
Essential Physical Functions
Work a minimum of 45 hours per week.
Stand/walk for 9–10 hours per day and sit for 1–2 hours per day.
Exert well‑paced and frequent mobility for up to five hours.
Lift up to 10 pounds frequently and up to 50 pounds occasionally.
Perform tasks that require reaching, bending, stooping, carrying, and fine manipulation.
Work in both warm and cool environments, indoors (95%) and outdoors (5%).
Tolerate higher noise levels from music, customers, and employee traffic.
Tolerate potential allergens: peanut, egg, dairy, gluten, soy, seafood, and shellfish.
Manage a fast‑paced, high‑volume restaurant through organization, schedule coordination, problem‑solving, cleanliness, training, marketing, and customer service.
Experience, Education and Behaviors
Represent Potbelly Values.
Minimum of 2 years of management experience in a restaurant or retail environment.
High School diploma required; Bachelor’s degree preferred.
All Shift Leaders and Managers must hold a valid Food Safety Certification (Illinois: Illinois Department of Public Health; other states: National Restaurant Association ServSafe, National Registry, or National Environmental Health Association). Failure to pass after two attempts disqualifies the individual from management duties.
Communicate effectively in English, both verbally and in writing.
Demonstrate strong customer service skills.
Show strong business acumen and interpersonal and communication skills.
Exhibit organizational abilities and multitasking proficiency.
Build and develop strong teams; resolve conflicts.
Apply strong interviewing skills.
Write effective schedules and maintain labor goals.
