Job Overview Outpatient Reception Clerk – Band 2 – Newcastle Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust.

The role is based in the Main Receptions department, working across Freeman and The Royal Victoria Infirmary. It involves providing an efficient and friendly reception service to patients and visitors, both in person and by telephone, ensuring a high quality of customer care at all times.

Schedule: Monday‑Friday. Two vacancies:

• 37.5 hours per week – shift patterns 07:30‑15:30, 08:00‑16:00, 08:00‑16:30 (lunch breaks included).

• 30 hours per week – shift 14:00‑20:00 (no break). Bank holidays work on a rotational basis.

Responsibilities

Support 24‑hour main reception and outpatient service, ensuring efficient delivery.

Complete all outpatient admin services in a timely manner.

Direct hospital visitors and the general public correctly to support patient care.

Provide efficient, sensitive reception service with high-level customer care skills.

Make and receive telephone calls to respond to public enquiries.

Maintain clean and tidy reception areas.

Qualifications & Education

NVQ Level 2 in an appropriate subject or equivalent qualification/experience.

Knowledge & Experience

Understanding of confidentiality issues.

IT skills in Windows‑based applications (to be assessed).

Desirable Criteria

Telephone experience.

Previous reception/clerical experience.

Previous customer care experience.

Previous NHS experience.

Awareness of health and safety regulations.

Skills & Abilities

Good literacy and numeracy skills.

Effective communication with the public, staff, and health‑care providers.

Good organisational skills.

Ability to work as part of a multi‑disciplinary team.

Important Note All references must cover a minimum of 3 years of employment and will be requested from current and previous line managers. Failure to complete this may result in the application not being processed.

Successful candidates requiring a DBS will pay for the DBS certificate via a salary deduction from the first month’s pay.
