Overview This position is a career ladder position for technical staff within the Department of Pharmacy. It recognizes the associate’s development, experience, and service to the department, hospital, and co‑workers.

The primary differences between a pharmacy technician II and a pharmacy technician III are: completion of a department cost savings or process improvement project; assuming the role of a lead for one of the pharmacy competency areas; and length of service to the department/organization.

Adheres to MercyOne performance expectations and performs all defined services and related duties in accordance with the mission, vision, and values of MercyOne.

Essential Functions

Unit dose medication distribution and control

Fills and exchanges unit dose carts for daily exchanges.

Refills requests for floor stock replacements as necessary.

Delivers medications to patient areas and restocks unit dose bins after cart filling.

Processes and delivers emergency medications.

Monitors drug stock levels and communicates with purchasing personnel to order supplies timely.

Central operations

Basic billing procedures (credit/debit).

Monitors drug storage areas for expiration dating.

Basic inventory management and HEMM product ordering.

Workflow prioritization.

Automated dispensing units

Restocks dispensing units from generated refill list.

Provides basic troubleshooting and resolution of problems.

Notifies appropriate personnel of any issues or concerns.

Compounded sterile products

Prepares IV admixtures from labels or verbal orders.

Prepares IV admixtures according to USP 797 guidelines and aseptic technique.

Completes chemotherapy training and competencies.

Prepares chemotherapy products as required.

Team support & initiative

Initiates miscellaneous functions within the department.

Meets break time requirements as defined in the Associate Handbook.

Uses telephone usage attitude as outlined in the handbook.

Volunteers for projects and assists co‑workers.

Works as a team player.

Quality improvement

Completes one department quality assurance/improvement project every six months, providing cost savings, increased patient safety, or best practice.

Manages time and completes tasks on schedule.

Mentorship & leadership

Serves as a mentor or lead on an advanced competency area (e.g., Tech‑Check‑Tech program, medication reconciliation, IT/automation, USP 797, 340B, etc.).

Safety & infection control

Adheres to all safety, infection control and colleague health policies.

Safety & Compliance

Attends required safety programs.

Uses required personal protective equipment consistently.

Demonstrates departmental emergency procedures.

Participates in regular drills (Code Red, Green, etc.).

Completes incident reports promptly.

Uses equipment safely and appropriately.

Reports and removes unsafe equipment/furniture.

Asks for assistance to ensure safety.

Maintains a safe working environment.

Minimum Qualifications

High school diploma plus specialized training: CPhT Training; Associate Degree preferred.

Required CPhT certification.

Registered with Iowa Board of Pharmacy.

At least 1 year as a pharmacy technician II at a MercyOne Hospital.

Excellent math and computer skills.

Ability to learn complicated processes and apply to new situations.

Attention to detail and accurate work within specified time periods.

Prioritization and task management skills.

Problem‑solving skills.

Good written and verbal communication skills.

Mentoring responsibilities in advanced competency areas.

Ability to handle stress related to emergency situations.

Physical & Mental Requirements

No exposure to blood, body fluid, or tissue.

Operates all essential equipment; good coordination, manual dexterity, and functional use of senses.

Protective clothing when exposed to hazardous/infectious materials.

Fast‑paced clinical environment; prioritizes work amid interruptions; rapid response to problems.
