The Department of Medicine at the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health and the UW Carbone Cancer Center (UWCCC) seek a head and neck/thoracic medical oncologist with a strong cancer research focus to join the Division of Hematology, Medical Oncology and Palliative Care. This role offers the opportunity to practice within a highly collaborative, multidisciplinary thoracic oncology program while building a clinically focused research portfolio.

Faculty are supported in developing clinical trials and/or health services research, with priority areas including genomics, precision medicine, cancer therapeutics, and potential involvement in cellular therapy. The position includes meaningful engagement in education and mentorship, along with active collaboration across UWCCC research programs. Investigators are expected to pursue and maintain independent extramural funding within a robust, NCI-designated cancer center environment.

You will join a large, well-established Division of Hematology, Medical Oncology and Palliative Care with more than 60 faculty, 30 advanced practice providers, and 19 fellows—offering both depth of expertise and a strong sense of academic community. Faculty lead innovative basic, translational, and clinical research spanning cancer biology, prevention, screening, treatment, survivorship, palliative care, hematologic malignancies, and cellular therapies.

This role provides meaningful opportunities to pursue clinical research aligned with your interests, supported by dedicated disease-specific research staff and substantial programmatic research funding. Clinical research is embedded within the NCI-designated UW Carbone Cancer Center (UWCCC), where 18 multidisciplinary Disease-Oriented Teams and a centralized Clinical Research Office support investigator-initiated and cooperative group trials. With more than 170 active investigators enrolling patients across two clinical sites, the environment is designed to help research programs scale and succeed.

For those with an interest in head and neck oncology, there is the opportunity to engage in the NIH-funded Head and Neck SPORE, offering access to national leadership, collaborative science, and translational impact. Faculty also benefit from extensive national and regional research networks, including NCCN, ECOG-ACRIN, Alliance, and the Big Ten Cancer Research Consortium.

Beyond research, you will have access to shared resources and collaborative opportunities across UWCCC, the VA Hospital, and the broader UW–Madison campus. Academic service can be tailored to align with your interests and career goals.

UW–Madison offers a world-class academic environment paired with an exceptional quality of life. Located in Wisconsin’s capital city, Madison combines natural beauty, vibrant culture, outstanding schools, and year-round outdoor recreation—making it an ideal place to build both a career and a life.
