What You Will Do

Perform oversight and provide guidance to organizations required to implement DOE Order 474.2, Material Control and Accountability. Assign to support specific Material Balance Areas (MBAs) and gain a strong understanding of MC&A requirements and operations within assigned MBAs. Build professional relationships to ensure compliance with production and research operations supporting Los Alamos National Laboratory Weapons Production mission.

Perform Material Balance Area Custodian duties as a Material Control & Accountability Specialist 2 or 3.

Conduct audits and appraisals of selected nuclear material accounting functions.

Identify potential physical inventory issues and recommend solutions prior to inventories.

Issue and monitor Action Forms to closure.

Monitor, analyze, and correct variances between site nuclear material inventory records and external databases.

Apply statistical inventory models to determine significance of inventory variances.

Mentor customers and NMCA staff.

Additional responsibilities for Specialist 3

Ensure compliance with nuclear material control and accountability regulations.

Assist operational staff in inventory preparation.

Guide operational organizations on staying in compliance.

Engage with operations on new projects or changes to existing projects.

Respond to abnormal conditions.

Participate in fact findings and process improvement exercises.

Mentor less experienced staff.

What You Need

Minimum Job Requirements

Specialized knowledge in nuclear facility operations, MBA custodian duties, or related nuclear material processes.

Experience analyzing, monitoring, correcting, and balancing inventory data following accounting best practices and routine inventory cycles.

Experience in nuclear material physical inventories and audits.

Demonstrated problem‑solving skills and analytical ability to execute accounting decisions consistent with NMCA regulatory drivers.

Intermediate Excel skills for report generation, presentation, and trending.

Additional Requirements for Specialist 3

Advanced knowledge in nuclear facility operations, MBA custodian duties, or related nuclear material processes.

Knowledge of NMCA requirements per DOE O 474.2.

Extensive experience with nuclear material accountability systems such as LANMAS.

Advanced skill interpreting inventory transactions to ensure good business practices and policy adherence.

Education / Experience

Specialist 2: Bachelor’s degree and 5 years of related experience (or equivalent).

Specialist 3: Bachelor’s degree and 8 years of related experience (or equivalent).

Desired Qualifications

Knowledge of TA55‑RD‑585 requirements.

Experience with scientific work or operations within TA‑55 material balance areas.

Experience implementing process improvement projects to improve efficiency and quality.

Work Environment

May require off‑normal hours, including shiftwork, nights, and weekends.

Work Location

Los Alamos, NM – onsite location at Los Alamos National Laboratory.

Position Commitment

Regular appointment employees must serve a continuous service period of one year to be eligible to apply for posted jobs. Current employees not yet having served the required time may only apply with managerial approval.

Security Clearance

Position requires Q clearance. Clearance requires U.S. citizenship except in rare circumstances.

Applicants must comply with the DOE Human Reliability Program and new‑employment drug testing. Marijuana use, although legal in some states, is prohibited under federal law for this position.
