What You Will Do This position will be filled at either the Material Control & Accountability Specialist 2 or 3 level, depending on the candidate's skills. Additional responsibilities will be assigned if hired at the higher level. The role supports the Los Alamos National Laboratory Pit Production mission and provides nuclear material safeguards support of Weapons Program operations at the LANL Plutonium Facility. The successful candidate will have strong attention to detail and exceptional interpersonal skills necessary to provide nuclear material security oversight in a production environment.

Materials Control & Accountability Specialist 2 Salary: $85,900 - $139,900

Performs nuclear material security functions, including:

Support Plutonium facility operations events, such as MAA vault door openings.

Respond to and assess Radiation Portal Monitor (RPM) alarms, perform troubleshooting, maintenance, and testing.

Integrate with LANL Protective Force during live exercises and response to real‑world events.

Perform sweeps of Material Balance Areas (MBA) to support nuclear material physical inventory.

Perform nuclear material confirmation measurements on items leaving the Plutonium Facility MAA.

Materials Control & Accountability Specialist 3 Salary: $94,500 - $154,600

All responsibilities of level 2, plus:

Make recommendations regarding nuclear material security and safeguards methods to improve protection of special nuclear materials during routine facility operations.

Communicate safeguards to technical and non‑technical personnel.

Review/revise work instructions regarding Z‑badge roles and RPM maintenance and testing.

Coordinate routine RPM maintenance and testing.

Investigate radioactive materials and shielding concerns regarding nuclear material security.

Interface with physical security and Vulnerability Assessment organizations regarding nuclear material security concerns.

Minimum Job Requirements

Working knowledge and experience in one or more major nuclear material security areas.

Basic understanding of radiation and radiation interactions in matter.

Demonstrated ability to prepare and present nuclear material safeguards incidents or anomalous condition reports.

Additional Requirements for Specialist 3

Working knowledge and experience in nuclear material detection and characterization fields, such as Radiation Protection or Non‑Destructive Assay.

Experience using radiation detection instrumentation, including portable gamma spectrometers with neutron detection capabilities.

Education / Experience Specialist 2: Bachelor's Degree and minimum 5 years of related experience (or equivalent). May consider professional training and certifications.

Specialist 3: Bachelor's Degree and 8 years of related experience (or equivalent). May consider professional training and certifications.

Desired Qualifications

Experience with Radiation Portal Monitor electronics and support equipment.

RadWorker II certification, DOE Q clearance, or equivalent, and HRP certification.

Current LANL R&D Electrical Worker – Energized qualification.

Experience handling nuclear materials.

Knowledge of LANL NMCA Plan and DOE O 474.2A.

Work Environment Subject to off‑hours on‑call, shift and/or weekend work supporting the LANL Pit Production mission.

Work Location Onsite in Los Alamos, NM.

Position Commitment Regular appointment employees must serve a period of continuous service to be eligible. Commitment is 1 year.
