Job Purpose The Environmental Coordinator works closely with local operations staff and management to ensure full compliance with all applicable environmental regulations and SSAB Americas’ Environmental Management System (EMS), certified to the ISO 14001 Standard. The role also provides support to other SSAB Facilities as directed by the Environmental Manager.
Duties and Responsibilities
Support facility environmental compliance activities as required by permits and written programs, through regular contact with operations and engineering personnel, and routine inspections of the local steel mill operations and other assigned facilities.
Provide support to operations in performance of environmental management requirements including incident investigation, training and communications, inspections and auditing, hazard assessment, and implementation of regulatory requirements.
Manage all documentation required by environmental permits, regulatory standards, and SSAB-specific programs (e.g., air emission records, waste manifests, Discharge Monitoring Reports, inspections, etc.).
Maintain and update written procedures contained in SSAB Americas’ ISO 14001 EMS. Implement the EMS, which include training requirements, monitoring/auditing elements and corrective actions.
Collect data and conduct sampling and inspections necessary to complete regulatory reports and assist the Environmental Manager in preparing and submitting all required environmental reports to local, state, and federal regulatory agencies.
Verify the status of Safety Data Sheets (SDS) for all products used by operations to ensure compliance with chemical inventory, reporting, spill response, and notification requirements.
Attend professional training classes and business association meetings. Participate in environmental committee meetings.
Serve as on‑site coordinator in the event of a reportable environmental incident. Function as the Emergency Coordinator for any environmental incident in the absence of the Environmental Manager.
Conduct periodic on‑site audits of contractors and contractor facilities to ensure compliance with SSAB Americas’ requirements and procedures.
Function as the point of contact for any local, state or federal regulatory inspection in the absence of the Environmental Manager.
Perform routine inspections and audits of operations to verify compliance with environmental regulations, permits, and internal programs.
Provide back‑up support to the Safety Department as required.
Regular and reliable attendance.
Qualifications Required Education
Bachelor of Science degree in Environmental Sciences, Natural Sciences, Environmental Engineering, or a related environmental field
Required Experience
Minimum of four (4) years of experience managing a comprehensive environmental compliance program
Preferred Experience
Minimum of seven (7) years of experience managing a comprehensive environmental compliance program
Experience in air, water and waste permitting
Prior experience in heavy manufacturing
Experience working with an ISO 14001 program
Proficient in Microsoft Excel, Word, Share Point, Minitab 17, and Power Point
Working Conditions
Periodically work in the mill environment and plant grounds with exposure to heat/extreme cold, wet and humid conditions
Amid fumes, dust, dirt and smoke, noise, mechanical, electrical, chemical hazards and industrial magnets
Walking/stairs and wearing safety equipment/clothing for protection from hazards
Push, pull, lift and/or carry up to 50 lbs
Vision and Hearing Capabilities
Talking to persons, on the phone, and/or in group settings
Hearing in person, on the phone, and/or in group settings
Vision at near, mid and far range and depth perception
Supervisor/Direct Reports This position reports to the facility Environmental Manager at the local steel plant and does not have direct reports. The coordinator works daily with the Environmental Specialist.
Position Type – Work Hours – Travel Requirements
Full time, salaried, and not eligible for overtime
Daytime shifts Monday‑Friday, with on‑call possibility during after‑hours
Office presence required
