Movies Under the Stars Recreation Specialist NYC Parks is the steward of over 30,000 acres of land in New York City, operating more than 800 athletic fields, nearly 1,000 playgrounds, a variety of recreational facilities and free cultural events. The City’s Mobile Movie Van provides free outdoor movies in underserved neighborhoods across all five boroughs.

Major Responsibilities

Drive to and from the garage to various parks throughout the five boroughs.

Set up and break down the movie screen and audio equipment.

Work closely with Parks Managers and Borough Coordinators to ensure that movie shows are professionally implemented.

Evaluate movie sites and ensure that locations are safe and feasible.

Maintain accurate records such as daily vehicle trip tickets, van inventory and program sign‑in sheets.

Maintain the mobile unit vehicle; keep the van neat and organized, keep an inventory of equipment, and update Citywide and Borough Coordinators on repairs needed or supplies that need replacement.

Work Location: Citywide

Duration: 6 months, starting April 2026

Fees:

Hired candidates will be subject to a processing fee of $40.00.

Candidates who are not currently employed by the City will be subject to a $101.25 background check fee.

Minimum Qualifications

18 months of participation in an art, craft or other recreational pursuit as a teacher, performer, coach, official, contestant or demonstrator, including at least one year of experience in that art, craft or recreational pursuit to be performed on the job, as described below; or

Experience or study in that art, craft or recreational pursuit to be performed on the job as described below, acquired in job training, internships, volunteer service, high school, college or other appropriate institution over at least a three‑year period; or

A satisfactory equivalent combination of education and experience as described above.

However, all candidates must have at least one year of experience or education in that art, craft or recreational pursuit to be performed on the job as described below.

Job assignments are limited to the following recreational specialties: woodworking, weight lifting, tennis, aquatics, soccer, fencing, golf, gymnastics, ham radio, horseback riding, hockey, figure skating, martial arts, music, nature study, art, photography, dramatics, dance‑roller skating, small crafts, sewing, astronomy, auto mechanics, baton twirling, bridge, chess, modern dance, dog obedience, puppetry, boxing and storytelling.

Preferred Skills

At least two years’ experience working with a variety of audio/visual equipment including video conferencing units, LCDs, laptop computers and amplification systems.

Experience with live event production and audio‑visual technical experience, including some previous supervisory experience.

College credits or certification from a technical training school specializing in audio video, multi‑media productions or a related subject.

Extensive knowledge of audiovisual equipment and computer software systems.

Experience working with the public in a community setting.

Valid New York State driver licence and driving knowledge of New York City.

Ability to lift heavy objects.

Residency Requirement: Residency in New York City, Nassau, Orange, Rockland, Suffolk, Putnam, or Westchester counties is required for employees with over two years of city service. New York City residency is required for all other candidates within 90 days of hire.
