Position Summary Positions in this banded class perform law enforcement work at a University campus or other State facility. With full powers of arrest, positions enforce the laws of the State and the United States Government. Positions have law enforcement authority ranging from traffic control to criminal investigations within a limited geographic jurisdiction. Work involves patrolling an assigned area, responding to complaints or calls for detection of violations in the enforcement of State laws and applicable regulations. Duties include apprehending observed violators committing offenses, investigating violations or complaints to assess and handle cases, collecting and preserving evidence and the chain of custody, testifying in court proceedings, and performing related work. Positions may serve as a patrol officer, detective squad member, crime prevention officer, or as a lead officer on an assigned shift. Positions at this level have an advanced level of training and experience compared to the Police Officer positions.
Master Police Officer I : Candidates will have a minimum of a High School Diploma or GED and six years of experience as a sworn local, state, or federal law enforcement officer. An advanced degree (JD, Masters, Doctorate) reduces the minimum experience required by one year. The recruitment salary for this level is $60,016 – $65,274.
Minimum Qualifications
Minimum of High School diploma or GED.
At least probationary certification from the NC CJETSC as a commissioned police officer and successful completion of the appointing agency’s designated field training program for newly appointed Campus Police Officers.
Note: Lateral hires who are already certified NC law enforcement officers and not first hired as a Police Officer Trainee may be assigned this classification conditional on successful completion of the field training program designated by the Agency Head. Out-of-state lateral hires must be NC CJETSC certification eligible.
Preferred Qualifications
Candidate must be at least 20 years of age at the time of appointment; candidate must meet physical and psychological requirements of the North Carolina Criminal Education and Standards Commission, which includes a physical exam, medical exam, psychological exam, and drug test.
In addition, the UNC Greensboro Police Department requires candidates to possess a valid North Carolina Driver’s License; and pass an in-depth background investigation, which includes driver’s history and criminal history with no felony convictions, psychological testing, drug screening, and physical.
Must successfully complete the university’s orientation course and a twelve-week department field training program during the probationary period; must satisfactorily complete the state-mandated probationary period.
The selected candidate must possess the ability to effectively communicate both orally and in writing and deal with the public and representatives of the criminal justice system in a professional manner.
The candidate(s) for this position will be considered an ‘ESSENTIAL’ Emergency Duty Employee.
This means that the position is one that is necessary to ensure University operations continue uninterrupted during periods of adverse weather and/or other emergency situations, including those that require the University to close.
As such the employee in this position will be required to report to work according to their usual schedule, or upon notification to report outside of their usual work schedule.

Key Responsibilities
Perform basic police services for the University Community and the general public.
Alert for violations of state law, city ordinances, and university regulations.
Complete all necessary oral and/or written reports promptly.
Arrest and process suspects through the appropriate procedures.
Stay current in all software-related programs such as police-Pak, Magistrate System, e‑mail, PZP, DCI, and CJIN; operate police vehicle.
Investigate criminal acts and follow through with the investigation to its culmination in criminal court and administrative hearings.
Investigate traffic accidents involving property damage and minor personal injury.
Respond to calls, recognize situations quickly and objectively, and determine appropriate actions.
Provide chemical analysis while processing a DWI arrest, identifying suspicious individuals, incidents, and vehicles.
Exhibit good working knowledge of all laws and apply that knowledge to normal activity.
Reason through problems and come to reasonable, acceptable conclusions in routine and complex situations with little assistance.
Evaluate and address crime prevention and community relations issues; coordinate and assist in community programs, identify community problems, analyze alternatives, and recommend solutions.
Present “Adopt a Cop” presentations.
Remain polite, courteous, and professional at all times; attend to the public’s distress and/or complaints promptly.
Keep the department informed through pass‑on; work proactively to address diversity issues with groups and individuals from different ethnic backgrounds.
Listen to and utilize citizen input; exhibit good teamwork skills and the ability to take on tasks that lead to the achievement of team goals.
Maintain personal contacts on a daily basis with departmental employees, University officials, community leaders, and other law enforcement agencies.
Subdue resisting suspects, effect forcible arrest, defend oneself, operate law enforcement vehicle, pursue fleeing suspects, perform searches of people and buildings, exercise independent judgment, apply appropriate use‑of‑force options, comprehend legal documents, command emergency personnel at accidents, emergencies, and disasters, and be willing to work day and night shift assignments.
