The Deckhand is responsible for the safe, efficient, reliable, and environmentally compliant operation of assigned area on a harbor tug boat. The primary function is to build and break tows during the process of transporting aggregate barges. The position may work up to a twelve‑hour shift on the harbor boat. The position does not require overnight stays on the vessel but working on multiple vessels may be required. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.

Education, Experience, Skills Required Education

High School Diploma/GED or an equivalent combination of training and work experience.

Candidate with valid Merchant Marine Document (Z-Card) preferred.

Valid Transportation Worker Identification Card (TWIC) preferred.

Valid Driver’s License.

Experience

Minimum of 6 months of proven proficiency aboard inner harbor and/or inland waterway tugs.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Spill containment and cleanup.

MSDS sheets and emergency action information.

Safety meetings.

Ensure safe, working conditions and orderliness of the vessel.

Follow all company safety rules and environmental regulations.

Wear safety equipment as required.

Communication: Must be able to read, write and communicate using the radio, speaker or electronic communication in English.

Posture/Flexibility: Tolerate repetitive and prolonged postures involving standing, sitting, twisting, squatting, kneeling, stooping, and reaching to the full range from above the head to the deck.

Flexibility: Extend both arms fully in horizontal and vertical planes.

Dexterity: Frequently use one or two hands for grasping and fingering to perform activities such as using hand tools, tying lines, and tightening nuts and bolts with high forces.

Balance/Coordination: Safely walk over catwalks, enter/exit hatches, and traverse uneven or slippery surfaces; climb ladders, stairwells, and push knees.

Essential Functions

Assist others on the vessel in preparing barges for the loading and discharging of cargoes.

Build tows by using cables and lines to tie and untie barges and boats.

Handle lines and rigging during tow building, locking and docking activities.

Perform scheduled preventative vessel maintenance, including cleaning, scraping, painting, and changing all oil and filters.

Inspect, correct if possible, and notify the Captain of any conditions that affect the safety of the boat.

Perform all duties while wearing protective equipment, including foul weather gear, life jacket, gloves and boots.

Adhere to and comply with company policies, United States Coast Guard regulations, and environmental regulations.

Perform simple repairs and maintain tools and equipment.

Measure draft of barge using a tape measure to ensure proper loading.

Familiarize with engine room piping, wiring, and valves.

Work required overtime and flexible work schedule.

Speak, read, and have a working knowledge of English.

Work outdoors and be exposed to varying or extreme weather conditions (e.g., heat, wet, cold).

May work in high or precarious places or cramped spaces requiring awkward positions.

Stand, walk, or sit for extended periods; grip, climb, reach, shovel, squat, crawl, pull, push, bend, and lift up to 45 pounds.
