Special Information:

This position may be eligible for a statutory base pay increase of $1.00 an hour effective July 1, 2026.

Location and Travel This position may be based in Helena or Bozeman, Montana. However, this is a fantastic opportunity to see much of the state while working with a range of agency staff and the public to achieve shared bat conservation goals. Work is primarily field‑based, and the position will involve significant travel around the state.

Physical demands include working long hours, occasionally at night; hiking in rugged terrain with heavy equipment, sometimes in bear country; working and camping in inclement weather and extreme temperatures; and potentially caving.

Candidates must be comfortable working in remote parts of the state, often solo, and have a valid driver’s license. The ability to drive a 4x4 vehicle in all weather and road conditions, change a tire, and hike or camp alone or in a team is essential.

Work Schedule This position will run from April 13 – August 28, 2026. The work schedule will vary with the season, with some office-based work at the start and end of the job. The position may involve variable schedules and night‑time schedules.

Responsibilities

Montana's Pd/WNS Surveillance efforts – capture, handling, identification, and sampling (e.g., swabbing of bats) of bats across the state, including in hibernacula, spring roosting sites, and summer roost sites.

North American Bat Monitoring Program (NABat) – acoustic monitoring of bats across the state following NABat protocol (June‑July).

Assist with implementation of management actions in August.

Assist with other project mist‑netting efforts as needed.

Maintain supply and equipment inventories.

Data entry, maintain database of sampling sites and results, and ship samples to testing laboratories.

Work with dozens of FWP and partner agency staff as well as private landowners to obtain access for surveillance and monitoring.

Participate in regular titer checks and receive rabies vaccinations and boosters as required.

Minimum Qualifications Two seasons of field experience, excellent organizational skills, strong written and oral communication skills, ability to work effectively in a team or solo setting, with little to no supervision; experience capturing bats or birds in mist nets; experience handling and identifying bats or other small animals; ability to make safe decisions while conducting field work; experience with data entry and management preferred.

Compensation Hourly rate: $21.11 – $21.11. Telework eligibility: Not Telework Eligible. Benefits package eligibility: Paid leave & holidays, retirement plan.
