Career Opportunity SIYMCA offers a rewarding opportunity as a Swim Lesson Instructor – Mommy & Me. You will help create a caring and supportive environment, promote the YMCA swim lesson program, and teach children and families the YMCA character values.
Responsibilities
Complete CPR/AED and First Aid certification classes at the YMCA quarterly. If unable to attend, complete training at another authorized provider; the YMCA will pay the training cost but not the time spent in training.
Create and adapt daily lesson plans.
Use allotted time efficiently for each 30‑45 minute lesson, reserving the last 5 minutes for play that directly relates to skills taught.
Prepare equipment and lesson plans before class start.
Communicate effectively with children, making them comfortable in the aquatic environment.
Communicate with parents to explain their child’s progress and the YMCA swim lesson program, including upcoming registrations and level recommendations.
Hand out mid‑session reports at the 5th class of each session and ensure families receive them. Report cards are given at the final class; submit to the Aquatics Director one week before distribution.
Maintain current CPR and First Aid certifications.
Keep accurate, current records and submit them on time to the Aquatics Director.
Manage pool usage to prevent interference with swim lessons and coordinate with lifeguards regarding non‑program swimmers.
Know and use pool areas appropriate for each class.
Begin and end all classes on time.
Employ discipline respectfully to safeguard learning and safety.
Encourage active participation from all children and keep non‑swimmers from creating unsafe situations.
Consult the Aquatics Director if a child repeatedly disrupts class.
Enforce class and pool rules with participants.
Submit session availability and progress trackers promptly for scheduling.
Promote future session registration to families enthusiastically.
Complete onboarding checklist and any required online courses.
Qualifications
Minimum 14 years of age.
Experience working with children is required; a strong swimming background is preferred.
Child CPR/AED and First Aid certifications required. If not certified upon hire, complete certifications within 3 months.
Excellent organizational, leadership, and communication skills. Understanding of the YMCA swim lesson program is essential.
