REPORTS TO Swim Lesson Manager and Aquatic Center Coordinators

JOB SUMMARY Working under supervision of pool management and the Swim Lesson Manager, the Swim Lesson Instructor is responsible for the instruction of group and/or private swim lessons as assigned. Swim Lesson Instructors are responsible for teaching swim lesson participants of varying age and ability levels.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES Other duties may be assigned.

Be familiar with swim lesson levels/curriculum and use course materials effectively

Provide instruction to varying ages

Begin and end class on time, remain after class to answer participant and/or parent questions and clean up supplies

Educate participants on proper technique and promote swimmer safety at all times

Maintain accurate and neat progress cards, certificates, and attendance information

Ensure all teaching areas are free of hazards and that materials and equipment returned to designated locations

Remove hazards and report deficiencies to the Swim Lesson Manager immediately

Communicate openly and in a positive manner with parents of participants to provide constructive feedback regarding student skills and progress

Tend to accident or emergency situations in accordance with accident/incident protocols

Present a professional appearance and attitude at all times, and maintain a high standard of customer service

Be aware of emergency action plans and be prepared to perform assigned role at all times

Comply with all Village policies, protocols, and procedures

Perform other job-related duties as assigned

COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS The wage range for this position is $16.50-$17.50 per hour. This position is seasonal and does not qualify for benefits.

QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. Must be able to successfully complete American Red Cross Certification Community First Aid and Safety

Prior experience as a swimmer (recreational or competitive) or swim lesson instructor preferred

High school or college education in progress or completed

This position requires the following.

Ability to positively interact with the public

Ability to lead small group and individual swim lessons with varying ages

Ability to complete and maintain swim lesson paperwork

Must be able to attend all mandatory meetings and instructor development sessions as scheduled

LANGUAGE SKILLS Ability to read and comprehend instructions, correspondence, and memos. Ability to properly fill out incident and accident reports as well be able to communicate in an emergency situation.

REASONING ABILITIES Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.

OTHER SKILLS & ABILITIES

Understanding of the principles, practices, and objectives of Parks and Recreation administration and of the Proesel Park Family Aquatic Center

Ability to prioritize duties and complete tasks within allotted hours

Ability to react calmly and effectively in emergency situations

Ability to communicate with the public tactfully and courteously

Commitment to promoting the positive image of Village of Lincolnwood

Ability to maintain efficient and effective communication with supervisor

Ability to follow routine verbal and written instructions

Knowledge of customer service standards and procedures

WORK ENVIRONMENT The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job. The noise level in the work environment varies between moderate and high. Frequent exposure to natural and seasonal weather conditions as well as insects while guarding the pool and completing job duties.

Comply with established safe work rules and the special instructions of the supervisor

Report all accidents and injuries immediately and cooperate in all accident and injury investigations, supplying supervisors with full and complete information

Submit recommendations for safety and efficiency, as well as report defective equipment and unsafe conditions

Know their exact duties in case of fire or catastrophe

Use safety equipment provided for personal use in performing daily work assignments

Only operate equipment trained and authorized to operate

Provide public protection from unsafe conditions and hazards resulting from municipal work operations

Participate in special safety activities, as designated, such as Safety Committees, Job Safety Analysis, special training, etc.
