Governed by CBA, the starting hourly rate is $25.0244 with yearly union increase.

Overview The Paratransit Mechanic Helper must possess required skills and experience related to the fleet of Paratransit vehicles. This includes knowledge to perform minor maintenance tasks safely. Responsibilities include performing preventative maintenance, removing and replacing tires, checking and adjusting fluids, replacing wiper blades, shifting buses, and responding to road calls. ASE certifications are encouraged and preferred. All work must be of the highest quality, ensuring vehicles are reliable and safe, while promoting a safe and productive work environment.

Essential Job Functions

Ensures buses operate in a safe, comfortable, like‑new condition by performing high‑quality maintenance, repairs, and inspections.

Performs preventative maintenance inspections.

Executes repairs on mechanical, electrical, pneumatic, and hydraulic systems including engines and transmissions.

Renders road calls, on‑the‑road repairs, and road tests as needed.

Maintains a safe and clean work environment including dusting, vacuuming, and light cleaning as necessary.

Performs other duties as assigned.

Approximate Percentage of Time for Essential Duties and Major Responsibilities

Performs preventative maintenance on fleet as needed – 30%

Repairs Paratransit fleet, focusing on minor to moderate problems – 20%

Supports and assists other mechanics – 15%

Cleans yard and work area – 15%

Shifts vehicles – 5%

Morning pull‑out defects – 10%

Washes buses – 5%

Purpose and Nature of Work Relationships

Has moderate contact with others inside the organization; works mainly with maintenance staff and vehicle operators.

Has moderate contact with others outside the organization.

Essential Knowledge and Skills

Basic knowledge of starting and charging systems, electrical and electronic systems, engine, transmission, front end and suspension, and brake systems.

Additional training from mechanical or technical schools, courses, or seminars desirable.

High school diploma or GED required.

Can work amid constant interruptions, prioritize tasks, be detail‑oriented, and handle time pressures.

Good communication skills and ability to convey concerns, questions, and diagnostic information.

Autonomous and self‑directed.

Basic math skills.

Able to take direction and instruction well.

Physically agile and able to lift up to 75 pounds.

Basic two‑way radio skills required.

Basic tools required.

Valid NYS driver’s license required.

Clean driving record and ability to obtain and maintain a Commercial Driver’s License, Class B with Passenger Endorsement.

Must pass a physical examination, including a drug test.

Additional Job Requirements

Wear uniforms and management‑approved safety shoes.

Must be able to lift 75 pounds.

Frequently works in outdoor weather conditions and is exposed to heat and cold.

Unique Working Conditions: Works around fumes, odors, chemicals, heavy machinery, and safety hazards.
