Service members who accept a role for placement at the IRC are eligible to apply for an IRC staff role once the service term is complete. This position will complete 900 hours of service within 12 months (average 17-18 hours per week) while receiving a living stipend via the federal AmeriCorps program. The total living stipend received over 12 months is $15,300 yearly via biweekly payments of $586.45. Upon completion of the 900 hours of service, the member will be eligible to receive an Education Award of $3,697.50. The candidate will also gain access to myriad professional training & development in addition to networking and career exploration opportunities. **Eligible applicants who apply will be referred on to the Salt Lake County point of contact for initial screening.****Priority Review Date:** Preference will be given to those who apply on or before January 11, 2026.**AmeriCorps Program Overview:****IRC Background:** Founded in 1933, the IRC is a leading nonsectarian, voluntary organization providing relief, protection and resettlement services for refugees and victims of oppression or throughout the U.S. Historically IRC resettles approximately 10,000 refugees per year and provides numerous program services to assist the refugee from their arrival through citizenship. In Utah, the IRC opened its doors 1994 and has since grown to serve approximately 2,000 refugees annually through nearly 20 different programs.**About the YALL Program:** Started in 2021, YALL stands for Youth, Agriculture, Leadership and Learning. It is a New Roots program at the IRC focused on supporting and educating refugee and new American youth ages 13-18 on topics related to food justice, agriculture, leadership, and more. Learn more on our website:**Scope of Position:** The Youth Agriculture AmeriCorps will play a central role in the successful implementation of youth programming. They will assist in the planning and teaching of youth activities, serve as a mentor, and help in the land management of New Roots community gardens and teaching spaces.**Key Responsibilities:***Youth Agriculture Program - 70%** Coordinate with the YALL team to deliver educational workshops and facilitate activities in agriculture, fieldwork, team building, leadership skills, food justice, community service and other program activities.* Assist in running a youth led CSA program, including overseeing outreach, harvests, packaging, delivery, and customer relations.* Assist in maintaining youth gardens, including crop planning, planting, harvesting, and upkeep.* Act as a mentor to a diverse group of youth in the YALL cohort and provide support in their personal development.* Participate in YALL program meetings and development activities, including weekly check-ins.* Regularly communicate with YALL participants to coordinate participation in activities.*Land Management – 20%** Assist New Roots team in maintaining garden and farm sites including: cultivation, weed and invasive species mitigation, infrastructure projects, and irrigation systems.* Maintain functional garden sites and positive partner organization relationships.* Support in gardener communications, orientations, and meetings.* Conduct End of Year feedback surveys and clothing/food drive.* Help in greenhouse operations including open office hours, education, and growing plant starts.*Markets and Food Access: 10%** Assist in set up, customer support and coordination of Redwood Farmers Market (occasional Saturdays).* Other duties as assigned.**Learning Objectives****:**Reflect and develop goals regarding personal development, leadership skills, and interest areas.
Build knowledge of how to lead and facilitate activities for a cohort of youth, including developing skills around leadership development, team building, and agricultural production.
Gain experience in land management, including installing and maintaining farm and garden infrastructure.
Grow knowledge of community food systems in Salt Lake City.
Develop small farm growing techniques including how to plant, cultivate, harvest, pack and wash produce.**Key working relationships****:****Position Report to:** Vy Ho, New Roots Agriculture and Community Education Coordinator**Position directly supervises:** Youth program participants, community volunteers.**Job Requirements:*** Valid driver’s license and access to reliable transportation.* Ability to work outside in variable weather conditions and lift 50 pounds.* U.S. Citizen, U.S. National, or Lawful Permanent Resident.* Commitment to the term of service.**Demonstrated skills and competencies:*** Farming/agricultural experience preferred.* Background in education, community engagement, food systems, agriculture, social work, or similar fields a plus.* Reliable, flexible and able to work independently.* Strong organization and communication skills and ability to work as part of a team.* Excellent interpersonal skills, comfortable mentoring and teaching people from diverse backgrounds.* Strong interest in international and refugee issues or desire to learn.* Lived experience of the communities served a plus.**Language Skills:** Fluent in English, both spoken and written. Other language skills a plus but not necessary.**Availability:** More hours in April through October may be completed due to peak programming during the agricultural season. April-October weekday availability on Tuesday-Friday from 9am-2pm preferred, with 1-2 Saturdays per month. Scheduling during remaining months is flexible.
