Summary The Emergency Department Technician functions under the general direction and supervision of the Registered Nurse within the Emergency Department. ED Tech provides patient care by performing the listed duties within context of their job description and the established procedures and standards of care in the Emergency Department. To provide a variety of nursing related and personal services for patients in the Emergency Department, and to facilitate the flow of patients into and out of the Emergency Department as directed by the Emergency Department nurses and physicians.
Position Reports To : Emergency Services Clinical Manager
Essential Functions
Transports stable patients under the direction of nursing staff. Assist registered nurses in critical or unstable patient transport.
Maintains competency and fulfills the role as a Bedside Assistant when needed.
Hourly rounding or sooner on patients and documentation in EMR. Check on patients needs, including turning, toileting, mouth swab. Make sure patients call light is within reach. Collaborate with RN about patient care. Communicate patient observations to the primary RN and document in EMR.
Take routine vital signs as per standards and RN requests to include weight. Assist with application of monitor lead placement, pulse oximetry and oxygen cannula or mask under the direction of RN.
Utilize bladder scanner to determine amount of urine in patient’s bladder and communicate results to the RN.
Assist in collection of specimens; blood, stool, urine specimens, and sputum specimens.
Completes EKGs and deliver to provider for review. Document in EMR.
Perform Point of Care testing to include; Guaiac stool specimens, urine dipstick, Glucose fingerstick.
Performs the QC for necessary point of care testing.
Assist with and set up for selected procedures, such as simple pelvics, suturing, holding for blood draws, and holding for LP testing.
When assigned as Triage Tech, assist patients back to assigned room, undress and obtain a complete set of vital signs to include weight and ECG if indicated. Notify primary RN that patient is in room.
Restock supplies
Linens and standard supply items in all rooms.
Blanket warmer and IVF warmer, date all IVFs and rotate them to avoid outdating.
Check par levels of soft restraints and contact Laundry if more are needed.
Sets up for wound irrigation.
Determine need for additional food items for patients including popsicles.
Prepare patient rooms pre and post discharge. Wipes down carts and equipment with disinfectant and places clean linen on carts.
Perform wound and burn care under RN discretion and supervision. Dressing application using clean technique.
Assist patient with crutches fitting, splinting, and gait training.
Assist patients with ADLS, including dressing, undressing, toileting.
Maintain supply of wheel chairs in Emergency Department.
Stay with confused patients and children, as needed and directed by the RN caring for the patient.
Assist with patients needing to be restrained per hospital policy. Performs the 15 minute checks and documents in the Electronic Medical Record.
Provide temporary break relief for unit secretary. Performs the role of the Unit Secretary as needed to cover ill calls.
Demonstrate compliance with Standard Precautions and utilize appropriate personal protective equipment.
Clean and stores instruments as directed. Inventory instruments per shift and report needs for replacements to the Lead EDT.
Maintains all annual training requirements.
Attends the crisis intervention and de-escalation course.
Understand principles of asepsis.
Understand principles of correct body mechanics and is able to apply these in assisting patients during transfer, lifting and ambulation.
Required to maintain active Basic Life Support (CPR) certification.
Other duties as assigned.
Demonstrate Standards of Behavior and adhere to the Code of Conduct in all aspects of job performance at all times.
Qualifications Required:
Current CNA License and MA-P certification.
BLS Certification.
Must possess basic computer skills related to Windows navigation, mouse usage, keyboarding, email communication and password management.
Desired:
Recent work experience in Emergency Medicine, acute care, or related field.
Physical/Sensory Demands O = Occasional, represents 1 to 25% or up to 30 minutes in a 2 hour workday.
F = Frequent, represents 26 to 50% or up to 1 hour of a 2 hour workday.
