Role Competitive Team Coach
Reports To Head Coach
Type of Position Part-Time, Hourly, Staff
Salary Range $18.50 to $21.00 Hourly
Current Openings We’re seeking a Team Coach to serve as a substitute for all of our locations.

Job Description At The Spot, coaches are more than just instructors–they’re educators and mentors who build relationships with kids and their parents that can last a lifetime. While this position may support various youth programs, coaches are primarily responsible for guiding one of our dedicated youth teams. They provide support during competitions and help athletes develop not only their skills, but also their character. Fostering resilience, integrity, and a strong sense of teamwork both on and off the wall. In collaboration with the Head Coach, they develop training plans and curriculums that cater the teams they coach.
Position Responsibilities
Coaching & Competition Support
Coach competitive teams and attend both competitions and team events throughout the year, including school breaks and holidays.
Record daily curriculum & participant performance (as directed)
Provide athletes the appropriate level of knowledge and skills to excel in climbing.
Program Development & Support
Assist in planning team trips, camps, and outings.
Support the identification and recruitment of potential team members.
Collaborate with the Head Coach to develop and implement age-appropriate, risk-managed climbing programs.
Understand and execute the program curriculum and instructions by the Head Coach.
Team Collaboration & Communication
Attend mandatory training sessions or meetings as directed by the Senior Manager of Programing and Head Coach
Provide regular feedback to the Coaching management team.
Lead and/or participate in coaches’ meetings before and after practice to offer feedback and/or comments on practices.
Coordinate with other departments to fulfill responsibilities as directed.
Address customer inquiries, concerns, and issues as necessary.
Safety & Risk Management
Provide ongoing instruction on climbing risk management including spotting, falling, landing, and gym hazards.
Manage risk during programming and ensure all safety standards are met.
Monitor climbing areas to ensure safety and enforce gym rules and policies.
Follow emergency procedures as needed to address any incidents.
Maintain all appropriate CPR, first aid, and training certifications
Adhere to all sexual harassment and safety standards
Additional Requirements
Promote the gym, community, and climbing culture through friendly and professional interactions.
Manage time clock responsibly and adhere to scheduling requirements.

Qualifications
Climbing Experience
Minimum 2 years climbing experience, including indoor, outdoor, bouldering and sport climbing.
Solid working knowledge of rope systems: belays, knots, rappels, etc.
Must be top rope and lead belay certified
Physically able to top rope and lead belay
Coaching Experience
Minimum 1 year of experience coaching & instructing climbing with youth.
Ability to break down, teach, and critique climbing techniques for climbers of all abilities.
Communication and Interpersonal Skills
Strong interpersonal, conflict resolution, and motivational communication skills.
Ability to work and connect with kids and parents.
Address customer inquiries, concerns effectively.
Teamwork and Leadership
Demonstrated experience in group management and leadership.
Strong decision making skills: critical thinking, adaptability.
A passion for personal development and a collaborative team player.
Additional Requirements
Availability to work evenings and weekends.
Ability to coach private lessons
Physically capable of standing for extended periods of time.
Background check required
Preferred Qualifications
Redpoint Level of 5.12/ V5, Onsight Level of 5.10/V3 or higher.
Ability to read and understand v8/5.13
Competition and route-setting experience preferred
CPR/First Aid certifications are preferred (WFR when relevant)
USAC Coaching Level 1 Certificate preferred
Safe Sport Certification preferred
Reports/logs Submit the following to the direct supervisor:
Program plans, curriculum, and client performance reports
Program delivery record for activity log & billing
Annual business feedback & review
Key Contributions
Foster skill development, resilience, and teamwork, guiding athletes through competitions and promoting strong character both on and off the wall.
Collaborate with the Head Coach to design and implement age appropriate, risk-managed climbing programs, and assist in planning team trips, camps, and recruitment efforts.
Ensure safety through risk management and climbing protocol, while actively participating in team meetings and maintaining effective communication with staff and parents.

Environmental and Physical Demands
Ability to lift and carry up to 75lbs
The ability to effectively and appropriately belay climbers of various ages and abilities, including both top-roping and lead belaying. This requires strength, endurance, and the ability to control a rope and manage equipment safely.
The ability to stand for extended periods during practices (often 3 or more hours) and demonstrations.
Climbing and balancing
Must be able to frequently work at heights
Continuous crouching, kneeling, twisting, reaching, and climbing
Continuous repetitive hand and arm movements.
Ability to hear and speak clearly.
Exposure to airborne chalk dust
