We provide a range of services for families and households across Southeast Massachusetts.
Job Summary Substitute Teachers will provide temporary coverage in our Head Start classrooms. As a Substitute Teacher, you will step into the role of the regular classroom teacher, ensuring the continuation of a safe, nurturing, and developmentally appropriate learning environment for preschool children. This is a great opportunity to contribute to the well‑being and education of young children in our community and gain experience within the Head Start framework.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Maintain a safe and positive classroom environment that promotes learning and social‑emotional development
Supervise children in the classroom, during outdoor play, meals, and transitions, ensuring their safety and well‑being at all times
Follow established classroom routines and schedules
Adhere to all Head Start Performance Standards, state licensing regulations, and program policies and procedures
Implement the existing lesson plans and activities provided by the regular classroom teacher
Engage children in age‑appropriate activities that promote cognitive, social‑emotional, physical, and language development
Read stories, lead songs, and facilitate group activities
Adapt activities as necessary to meet the diverse needs of the children in the classroom
Follow any specific instructions or notes left by the regular classroom teacher
Maintain confidentiality regarding children and families
Other Requirements
Must pass a criminal background check and other required clearances
Must have or be willing to obtain CPR and First Aid certification
Must meet the physical requirements of the position, including the ability to lift and carry young children, bend, stoop, and actively engage with children
Valid driver's license and reliable transportation is required
Schedule
Monday-Friday
Varied days and hours
Hourly Rate $15-$16
Knowledge, Skills and abilities
Ability to supervise and interact positively with young children
Flexibility and adaptability to work in different classroom settings and with varying age groups (typically 3-5 years old in Head Start)
Patience, enthusiasm, and a genuine interest in working with young children
Ability to follow directions and work independently
Basic understanding of classroom management techniques
Education & Experience
High school diploma or equivalent is required
Some experience working with preschool‑aged children in a group setting is preferred
Familiarity with early childhood development principles is plus
