Provide health services to students within the school system according to the accepted Standards of School Nursing Practice as published by the American Nurses Association and the National Association of School Nurses. The practice of school nursing shall be within the guidelines and Nurse Practice Act published by the Alabama Board of Nursing.

Duties & Responsibilities

Provide direct student/patient care, including first aid care, administering medication, performing invasive procedures, and any tasks that require independent nursing judgement or intervention.

Conduct health appraisals of students and make referrals in the areas of vision, hearing, dental, physical disability, and scoliosis according to health services policies and procedures.

Consistently use aseptic techniques when preparing medications.

Administer medication in accordance with policies, procedures, and guidelines.

Check students for head lice as indicated and instruct parents on correct treatment of conditions.

Obtain students’ past and present health history from all available sources and accurately enter that information into an electronic patient history record, maintaining the health records of students.

Complete health care plans and emergency care plans for students and review them annually.

Monitor equipment, supplies, and materials for the school health clinic.

Monitor medications and other materials for expiration dates.

Maintain the security of school health supplies and materials.

Prepare health reports for the supervisor, Board of Education, health department, and State Department of Education as required.

Provide resources to school personnel on health and safety issues.

Provide professional learning on health‑related topics for school personnel.

Train medication assistants and evaluate their performance in compliance with policies, procedures, and guidelines regarding medication administration to students.

Maintain the privacy and confidentiality of students’ health information.

Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Possess a valid Registered Nurse license with the Alabama Board of Nursing.

Graduate from an accredited nursing school approved by the Alabama Board of Nursing.

Hold an associate degree.

Maintain current CPR certification.

Other qualifications as required by the Board.

Reports To: Nurse Coordinator

Salary Range: RN Substitute Daily rate $40/hour
