The Orthopaedic Technician (or “Cast Tech”) performs a variety of functions to support and care for patients with a limited degree of supervision in the ambulatory clinic, inpatient, and emergency room settings. Collaborates with specialty teams to provide outstanding patient service in an innovative and fast-paced Orthopaedic Practice.

Responsibilities

Apply and adjust fiberglass/plaster casts, braces, and/or splints; may assist with assembling and attaching orthopaedic traction equipment and devices.

Educate patients on care and usage of casts.

Act as a resource for colleagues with less casting experience.

Train others (Athletic Trainers, Nurses, Interns) on proper casting techniques.

Provide assistance to the physician during minor procedures.

Assist provider in cleansing wounds, reducing fractures, and applying surgical dressing.

Fit thermoplastic splints and/​or braces.

Inspect cast saws to ensure optimal performance.

Escort patients to exam rooms and assist physicians with exams as needed; assist nursing staff to maintain timely and orderly patient flow.

Maintain inventory and security of devices and supplies for care of orthopaedic patients, including cast materials, braces, splints, and other devices; ensure appropriate submission of charges for devices dispensed.

Participate in and/or facilitate site‑wide committees, meetings, in‑services, and activities.

Maintain a positive and enthusiastic attitude towards learning and teamwork.

Perform other duties as required or assigned.

Qualifications

Associate Degree in Science in Orthopaedic Technology.

One (1) year of previous health‑care related experience preferred.

Excellent interpersonal communication skills.

Ability to read and understand medical terminology.

Currently registered with the New Hampshire Board of Registration for Medical Technicians.

Certification as an Orthopaedic Technologist (OTC) by the National Board for Certification of Orthopaedic Technologists (NBCOT) or registration as a Registered Orthopedic Technologist, R.O.T. by the American Society of Orthopedic Professionals (ASOP).

Certification in BLS required within 30 days of hire.
