Head Brewer

The Head Brewer is responsible for production of Samuel Adams and Boston Beer products, managing process and formulation to ensure adherence to BBC product specification. The Head Brewer works closely with the Senior Manager, Brewing Operations for ingredient selection and specification, research and development, and capital projects.
What You'll Brew Brewing Operations:
Manage the process and formulation of products to ensure adherence to specification and performance targets
Support the Senior Manager, Brewing Operations in supplier relations through raw material selection and logistics to include, but not limited to, malt, hops, yeast, spices and flavors
Develop short and long term production schedules to fulfill onsite needs and balance off‑site, on‑premise needs.
Create and maintain diverse product offerings at our Cincinnati Taproom.
Monitor key process variables and maintain a high level of adherence to KPIs and related goals and metrics.
Manage QA performance metrics for all products, reporting exceptions to Senior Manager, Brewing Operations. Respond to QA/QC data by implementing process and formulation adjustments to ensure adherence to BBC specifications.
Compile data and deliver summary reports to brewing management
Drive capacity utilization and capital equipment requests for brewery plant and equipment
Responsible for making brewery sanitation and safety a priority with a program that ensures all production employees are fully trained and all safety policies and procedures are compliant.
Maintain a schedule of routine maintenance on all mechanical systems in the brewery
Perform brewery process audits for BBC brands to ensure consistency, repeatability, and to facilitate flavor agreement across the multi‑plant system.
Coordinate/participate in taste panels to evaluate system wide adherence to quality specification and flavor agreement across the multi‑plant system.
Participate in taste panels of new products, including researching history of the style, sampling competitors’ products from the market, and discussing development of the product based on BBC brewing philosophy
Coordinate Brewing, Quality, and Operations efforts to ensure timely procurement of raw materials for seasonal and year‑round beers and products
Provides vacation coverage as warranted and approved by the Senior Manager, Brewing Operations
Provides timely updates of process and formulation changes, materials utilization, etc. to Senior Manager, Brewing Operations
Work with legal department regarding new product development to ensure compliance.
Leadership & Management
Responsible for training and personal development of BBC production staff and/or interns
Work and communicate effectively within the BBC Brewing Management Network
Responsible for the hiring, onboarding, training, and retaining of engaged & high‑performing coworkers.
Provide clear expectations and direction to direct reports. Resolve conflicts, remove obstacles, and inspire action while fostering a collaborative, results‑driven team environment.
Deliver regular feedback through coaching, development opportunities, and performance reviews to drive learning, growth, and continuous improvement.
What Ingredients You'll Bring Education & Experience 4‑Year/Bachelor’s Degree in Biology, Fermentation Science, Engineering, Chemistry, and related concentrations OR commensurate industry experience. Formal brewing education highly preferred
Minimum Qualifications
3+ years’ experience working full time in a professional brewing role (in addition to degree and/or relevant experience)
Previous experience in beer production and small batch brewing.
Previous experience scheduling, managing inventory, tracking performance metrics, and reporting.
Management/team lead experience
Strong business and communication skills. Able to collaborate with key stakeholders and cross‑functional partners across the Boston Beer Company.
Proven ability to prioritize and make informed decisions quickly in a fast‑paced environment
Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite
Preferred Qualifications
Knowledge of brewhouse operations, 4‑vessel brewhouse equipment, and CIP program systems
Demonstrated experience in brewing recipe development
Experience using brewing‑specific ERP systems (i.e. EKOS, Brew Planner, Beer 30)
Demonstrated experience in project planning, facilities management, budgeting and financial analysis
Experience with events planning and execution
Experience utilizing SAP management systems
Physical Requirements
Ability to lift up to 50 lbs, sometimes repeatedly
Regular walking and standing for long periods of time (up to 11 hours a day) on concrete, metal and grated surfaces
While performing the duties of this role, it may be required to climb flights of stairs, work from heights or on elevated platforms
Agile enough to step over, crouch or crawl under
Established dexterity to
Handle materials
Operate equipment
Interface with computer systems with precision
Ability to pour, pick up a glass, deliver beverages to customers
Ability to handle kitchen and service equipment

At the Boston Beer Company and in accordance with pay transparency laws, we are open about our salary ranges. For this role, the salary range is between $70,700 and $133,300. However, it’s important to note that where the person hired starts in this range is dependent on their related experience, skillset and location. Additionally, this position qualifies for a discretionary annual bonus based on company and individual performance, and certain sales roles might include a car allowance.
