The Chaplain 2 plays a key role in Catholic healthcare by ensuring the spiritual needs of patients/residents, families and staff are tended to and by contributing to the culture of holistic care. The Chaplain 2 serves as staff chaplain for one or more clinical units/locations and has responsibility for ensuring the spiritual and religious needs of patients/residents and families are met on the assigned units. They respond to emergency pager requests 24/7, on a regular rotation as part of an on‑call schedule. The Chaplain 2 develops and leads worship services and initiatives to meet the spiritual needs of the organization. Operating independently under general supervision within a pastoral care team, they mentor less experienced pastoral staff, volunteers, and students.

Chaplaincy Care Responsibilities

The chaplain gathers and evaluates relevant data pertaining to the patient's situation and/or bio‑psycho‑social‑spiritual/religious health.

The chaplain develops and implements a plan of care to promote patient well‑being and continuity of care, and facilitates the expression of the patient's spiritual practices.

The chaplain enters information into the patient’s medical record that is relevant to the medical, psycho‑social, and spiritual/religious goals of care.

The chaplain collaborates with the organization’s interdisciplinary care team and the pastoral care team.

The chaplain adheres to the Common Code of Ethics and the Ethical and Religious Directives for Catholic Health Care Services.

The chaplain respects confidentiality of information from all sources in accordance with federal and state laws.

The chaplain provides culturally competent, patient‑centered care, ministering to all persons regardless of faith, race, affiliation, or orientation.

The chaplain attends to administrative issues and maintains orderly department functioning.

The chaplain is familiar with federal and state laws of end‑of‑life practice.

The chaplain provides pastoral care to staff via individual and group interactions, crisis debriefings, unit services, and special events.

The chaplain presides over memorial and special services and provides leadership in the professional practice setting.

The chaplain mentors other staff, students, and volunteers to enhance departmental quality.

The chaplain engages in evidence‑based care, ongoing evaluation, and research as appropriate.

The chaplain maintains current knowledge and professional certifications, and demonstrates the ability to teach and educate through current research integration.

The chaplain performs other duties as assigned or requested.

Qualifications

Experience – Five years in pastoral ministry with at least 2 years in a healthcare setting.

Education – Graduate degree in theology or related field from an accredited seminary or theological school.

Training – Completion of 4 units of Clinical Pastoral Education (CPE) through ACPE and a commitment to become certified within 24 months of hire.

Special Skills – Fluent in English; knowledge and skill in dealing with spiritual dynamics of illness, loss, and death; ability to function as a member of an interdisciplinary team; strong interpersonal, teamwork, and communication skills; commitment to professional growth; ecumenical openness; computer proficiency.

Licensure – Board Certified with NACC, APC or NAJC and appropriate ecclesial endorsement.
