Substitute Custodians ($16.35 hourly)
Dorchester County Public Schools is currently accepting applications for the position of Substitute Custodian. The position involves school and office cleaning work, completion of minor maintenance tasks, as well as groundskeeping. The incumbent must be a team player who takes ownership of responsibilities and works to ensure a clean and safe building.
Duties
Perform daily duties assigned per shift schedule including scrubbing and cleaning rest rooms, trash removal, vacuuming, refilling dispensers, etc.
Inspect and perform other tasks as needed: dust, scrub, strip and wax hard surface floors, burnish, shampoo and dry carpeted surfaces, wash windows, furniture, fixtures, empty pencil sharpeners, high dust, damp mop, wet mop, spot mop, and otherwise provide all housekeeping services.
Monitor level of cleaning supplies and fill as needed.
Report building/system deficiencies to head custodian.
Perform minor maintenance and repair tasks as required (e.g., change light bulbs, air filters, painting).
Provide routine maintenance and inspections of emergency lights, ground fault receptacles, roof drains, playground equipment.
Perform grounds-related tasks such as snow and ice removal, policing grounds for trash, power washing exterior walls, monthly inspections of fencing and gates.
Secure building at end of shift including locking doors, activating alarm system, turning on security lights.
Assist with moving and transporting furniture, equipment, boxed textbooks, athletic equipment, and other supplies weighing up to 75 pounds.
Assist building principal, teachers, and students in tasks as may be required.
Assist with special custodial and maintenance projects as needed.
Direct report to the head custodian at work location.
Performs other duties as assigned consistent with the classification.
Qualifications
High School Diploma or G.E.D. certificate.
Possess and maintain a valid driver's license and reliable transportation.
Knowledge of cleaning materials and equipment, heating systems, principles of electricity and mechanics.
Understanding of written and verbal instructions, manuals, warnings related to supervision, safety, equipment use.
Ability to accept directions from supervisors.
Proven ability to work cooperatively with others or independently.
Ability to climb a ladder and work overhead.
Ability to work for long periods while standing.
Ability to work in adverse weather conditions.
Ability to work weekends or evenings as required.
Ability to use cleaning chemicals and equipment safely.
Ability to perform lifting, carrying, or other manual labor.
Ability to follow instructions and learn to operate standard machines used in custodial and grounds work.
Experience in commercial maintenance.
Be dependable, responsible, helpful, and able to work successfully with other people from diverse backgrounds.
Proven ability to work independently with little direction.
Proven ability to perform duties and interact with public, clerical, professional and executive staff appropriately.
Proven ability to take complete ownership of responsibilities.
