Highway Maintenance Worker III: Crew Leader
Job Responsibilities Serves as a crew leader coordinating various construction, repair, and preservation activities for roads within Beaufort County. Operates heavy equipment such as motor grader, excavator, backhoe, and slope mower. Instructs crew members daily in safety practices including flagging operations, wearing safety equipment, vehicle safety, and job site hazards. Ensures all work performed is recorded in the Highway Maintenance Management System (HMMS). Assists the supervisor in investigating, recommending, and taking corrective action related to work requests for drainage, vegetation, and complex surface repairs. Manages time and equipment effectively to accomplish the unit’s goals, adjusting scheduled work to include work requests. Creates and implements a weekly work schedule. Maintains 95% equipment utilization, as reported in the Department’s monthly utilization report. Verifies that daily and monthly equipment maintenance reports are accurately completed and delivered to the shop supervisor or RMF. Performs work during inclement weather and emergency operations. May be required to work 12‑hour shifts and to be on call. Performs other related duties as assigned. Minimum And Additional Requirements Two (2) years of related work experience, or an approved acceptable equivalence. Requires a valid motor vehicle operator’s license. Requires attainment of a Class A Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) within six (6) months of placement in the position. Physical Requirements The physical demands for the essential functions of this position involve bending, stooping, reaching, twisting, climbing, balancing, kneeling, pushing, pulling, grasping, and physically manipulating objects of varying size, shape, weight, and material. Must be able to lift up to 50 lbs. May be required to work outside of normal work schedule, especially during inclement weather or other departmental‑related emergencies.
