About Us North Carolina Department of Adult Correction is one of the largest state agencies with more than 19,000 employees.

It is responsible for safeguarding and preserving the lives and property of citizens through prevention, protection, and preparation and the care, custody, and supervision of adults sentenced after conviction for violating North Carolina laws.

The agency oversees state prisons and the Division of Community Supervision, among other divisions, and has a mission that matters.

Description of Work Salary range: $37,621 – $54,078 (NC Grade 05‑NC Grade 07).

All hires are eligible for a $3,000 sign‑on bonus and a $1,000 employee referral bonus.

The North Carolina Department of Adult Correction offers competitive starting salaries and guaranteed annual increases through the Step Pay Plan approved by the Legislature.

Responsibilities

Ensure the care, custody, and control of offenders.

Tour assigned areas, observe offender activity, identify behavioral or medical issues to take safety measures.

Perform general security duties: search for weapons and contraband, monitor movement, maintain records.

Escort offenders within and outside the institution.

Use and maintain keys and other equipment and supervise offender work details.

Additional security duties vary by post‑assignment as required.

Qualifications

Active driver’s license.

Certification by the North Carolina Criminal Justice Education & Training Standards Commission.

Minimum education and experience:

Correctional Officer I: High School or GED diploma or equivalent; no experience required.

Correctional Officer II: High School or GED diploma plus one year experience as a Correctional Officer or equivalent.

Correctional Officer III: High School or GED diploma plus two years experience as a Correctional Officer or equivalent.

Work Schedule Full‑time position.

Employees must be able to work any shift, including rotating, fixed shift, or split shift, days, nights, weekends, holidays, and mandatory overtime as required.
