Days per year: 180. Wage: $13.25–$15.59 per hour. Job Title: Bus Attendant. Department: Transportation. Reports to: Lead Driver. Wage/hour status: Nonexempt. Pay grade: Aux 2.

Primary Purpose A Bus Attendant shares responsibility with the driver for the care and safety of students being transported by bus to and from school. All employees of SISD are expected to act with integrity, support organizational goals, communicate in a clear and respectful manner, champion the needs of our students, and drive continuous improvement.

Qualifications

Minimum 18 years of age

Clearance on Criminal History Check

Preferred

Job related experience

CPI training

CPR training

Special Knowledge/Skills

Demonstrates an interest in and liking for children and young adults.

Capable of assessing situations in emergencies quickly and reacting with necessary measures for the protection and well-being of special needs children.

A Special Needs bus attendant will be physically capable of performing duties associated with special needs students such as lifting, kneeling and extended reach.

Major Responsibilities and Duties

Loading and unloading students

Evacuating students in emergency situations

Providing emergency assistance to special students as needed

Assisting driver in daily interior bus inspection

Maintaining and updating student records

Documenting and reporting inappropriate or unacceptable behavior

Maintaining discipline in a positive manner

Recognizing evidence of abuse and neglect

Assisting the driver in keeping interior of bus clean

Maintaining accurate time checks and student counts as required

Assisting the auxiliary driver with route directions and student management

Performing other related duties as assigned

A wide variety of equipment is used to accommodate special needs students. It is necessary for the bus attendant to be familiar with the design and operating procedures of this special equipment, as well as knowing how to conduct equipment inspections and make simple "field adjustments" during breakdowns.

Working Conditions: Physical demands include mobility, prolonged sitting, repetitive hand and arm motions, lifting, carrying, pushing, and pulling. The position will also require traveling within the district. Mental demands include maintaining emotional control and effective communication in both oral and written English. Environmental conditions include working outside and inside with moderate exposure to extreme temperature (hot and cold) and vehicle fumes.
