English Language Arts Teacher - 8th Grade Position Purpose Under the general supervision of the School Principal, the teacher will develop students' skills in listening, speaking, reading, writing, foster communication skills, enhance appreciation of literature of all types, motivate students to read a wide variety of publications to derive information, comprehend and critically assess reading materials, and promote the development of skills in English reading, grammar and syntax.

Essential Functions

Develop and administer English education curriculum consistent with district goals.

Promote a safe classroom environment conducive to individual and small group instruction.

Create lesson plans and instructional materials that translate into learning experiences, developing sequential assignments and challenging students.

Teach English grammar and syntax, sentence and paragraph structure, composition, vocabulary, word usage, creative writing, and independent thinking.

Develop standards for critical analysis through group discussions on a variety of reading materials.

Collaborate with students and others to prepare materials for literary publications and contests.

Conduct ongoing assessment of student learning, modify instruction to meet individual needs, including students with special needs.

Maintain familiarity with district and state standardized tests to adapt curriculum for maximum achievement.

Continue professional development by attending seminars, workshops, or conducting research.

Organize and maintain accurate record-keeping, grading, and reporting for all student activities.

Encourage parental involvement and ensure effective communication with students and parents.

Ensure student conduct conforms to school policies and establish a functional learning atmosphere.

Coordinate with professional staff, attend faculty meetings and committees.

Select and requisition appropriate books, instructional aids, and maintain inventory records.

Additional Duties Performs other related tasks as assigned by the Principal and central office administrators.

Equipment Uses standard office equipment such as personal computers, printers, copy and fax machines, and telephone.

Travel Requirements Travels to district buildings and professional meetings as required.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Knowledge of current teaching methods and educational pedagogy, including differentiated instruction.

Knowledge of English grammar, word usage, spellings, literature, and other content areas.

Knowledge of data information systems, data analysis, and action plan formulation.

Knowledge of applicable federal and state education laws.

Ability to use computer network systems and software applications.

Ability to organize and coordinate work.

Effective communication with students and parents.

Self‑evaluation for professional growth.

Establish and maintain cooperative working relationships.

Physical and Mental Demands, Work Hazards Works in standard office and school building environments.

Certification/License

State Certification as an English Education Teacher.

Education

Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in an education discipline applicable to the teaching assignment.

Master's degree in a related area preferred.

Experience Successful prior teaching experiences in English a plus.
