Summary This position assists the radiologist and other physicians with high quality, computerized tomographic and radiographic images required in part for the diagnosis and treatment of patients while ensuring the least amount of radiation exposure to oneself and the patient. Provides general care to the patient while in the department.

Responsibilities

Perform computer tomography studies following protocol. Differentiate between normal and abnormal anatomy and tailor exams in accordance with patient history, protocol, and Radiologist instruction.

Administer IV and oral contrast as required for procedures according to protocols. Follow departmental protocol and institution guidelines for delivery of IV contrast material. Monitor patients’ physical and mental condition throughout the entire procedure and record all patient data appropriately.

Provide radiation protection for patients, self and others using gonadal shielding and collimation where applicable. Document acknowledgment of scheduling as directed.

Perform nursing duties, including but not limited to the following: assisting the radiologist in the performance of sterile procedures, practicing sterile technique, obtaining vital signs, obtaining pertinent clinical history, and being proficient in venous puncture. Document all important data appropriately. Identify allergic reactions or any other urgent medical condition and notify and assist the radiologist in the treatment of such a situation.

Other duties: prepare and maintain patient information and digital files in a computerized database; perform clerical duties in the absence of clerical personnel; orient and train new personnel and students to departmental policies, procedures, and protocols; participate in quality assurance and CQI programs as needed; perform all other duties as assigned.

Certifications and Licensure

BLS: Basic Life Support (required within 1 month of hire)

ARRT CT: ARRT CT (required within 3 years of hire)

ARRT: Reg Radiologic Technologist (required within 1 year of hire)

Required Education Associate degree (essential)

Experience, Training and Skills

Basic knowledge of personal computer, keyboard dexterity, and RIS/PACS/HIS.

Interpersonal skills needed to communicate successfully with individuals and groups and interact with people at all levels.

Tuberculosis (TB) testing as required according to MIOSHA standards.

Mandatory OSHA training must be completed annually according to the Exposure Control Plan.

Physical / Mental Requirements and Typical Working Conditions

Exposure to stressful situations, including those involving public contact, trauma, grief, and death.

Ability to wear personal protective equipment that includes latex materials or appropriate substitutes if required.

Ability to move freely about the facility with or without an assistive device and perform all outlined job functions.

Vision and hearing are necessary, with or without assistive device(s).

Frequently required to sit, stand, and walk for long periods of time; may require frequent postural changes such as stooping, kneeling, or crouching.

Some exposure to blood‑borne pathogens and other potentially infectious material; must follow MyMichigan Health protocols and TB testing as required.

Ability to handle multiple tasks, work independently, attend regularly, and remain alert.

Overall dexterity required, including handling, reaching, grasping, fingering, and feeling; repetitions of these movements may be frequent.

Physical Demand Level: Medium. May occasionally (0‑33% of the workday) lift or carry 21‑50 lbs., frequently 34‑66% of the workday 20 lbs., and/or walk/stand/push/pull arm/leg controls with constant (67‑100% of the workday) 10 lbs.
