Half Summer Hero Counselor – Camp Kingfisher
Join Chattahoochee Nature Center, Inc as a Half Summer Hero Counselor at Camp Kingfisher.
Position Overview Half Summer Hero positions are for applicants with Camp Kingfisher experience: a staff member or at least two years as a Leader in Training (LIT). They are intended for individuals who cannot commit to the entire summer but can work at least four weeks. Former LITs must attend at least 75% of staff training. Former staff members’ attendance will be at the discretion of Camp Directors.
As primary caregivers for camper groups, counselors lead activities, coordinate with co-counselors, maintain safety, plan schedules, and communicate with parents.
Responsibilities
Supervise groups of children grades K-7 in an outdoor setting.
Lead camper activities with excellence and enthusiasm.
Develop and implement environmental education activities such as hikes, animal demonstrations, and science exploration programs.
Maintain high standards of health and safety for campers and staff.
Clean camp facilities as needed.
Handle captive wildlife daily during camp programs.
Attend weekly staff meetings and training sessions.
Assist in program areas such as waterfront, pool, arts and crafts as directed.
Support Camp Kingfisher aftercare program.
Complete additional duties as assigned.
Participate in evening programming (older camper groups).
Contribute to verbal and written evaluations and communication as requested.
Track and record hours worked, and obtain director’s approval for additional hours.
Physical Demands and Work Environment
Willingness to work outdoors during the summer season.
Must be able to lift over 20 pounds.
Valid driver’s license or state‑issued ID.
Skills
Experience and passion for teaching or working with children.
Comfortable in outdoor settings.
Background in environmental education, natural history, teaching, childcare, or camps.
Willingness to handle captive wildlife with training provided.
Current tetanus shot or willingness to obtain one.
Current First Aid/CPR certification (course provided).
