Job Responsibilities Performs Crew Foreman duties with Orangeburg Maintenance. Supervises a crew of skilled and semi-skilled Highway Maintenance Workers on the Work Request Crew involved in a variety of maintenance activities such as patching potholes, clearing right of way, cleaning ditches and drainage pipes, and installing driveways. Handles, recommends and/or takes corrective action in connection with damage to SCDOT or private property, which are complex in nature. Completes work requests from the general public in reference to drainage problems and needs on the highway right of way. Maintains weekly and monthly reports, time sheets and cost records; recommends personnel actions including promotions, transfers, and disciplinary measures; rates employees yearly according to the Employee Performance Management System. Maintains all paperwork and reports (HMMS) that are essential to the department. Performs on‑call services as needed. Supervises and coordinates crew during hazardous weather events including snow, ice, and storms. Performs other related duties as assigned.
Minimum and Additional Requirements Three and one‑half (3.5) years of related work experience; or an approved acceptable equivalence. A valid motor vehicle operator’s license is required. Requires attainment of a Class A Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) within six (6) months of placement in the position.
Physical Demands Involves bending, stooping, reaching, twisting, climbing, balancing, kneeling, pushing, pulling, grasping and manipulating objects of varying size, shape, weight, and material. Must be able to lift up to 50 lbs. Requires walking for extended periods, traversing rough and uneven terrain, and working in close proximity to motoring traffic and natural hazards. May need to work outside normal hours, especially during inclement weather or emergencies. Frequently exposed to the outside environment in all weather conditions, noise, oil or grease daily.
