Job Responsibilities Plans, organizes, and directs Maintenance Foreman and/or crews performing various types of roadway maintenance/repair throughout Charleston County. Communicates with local officials, administrators, and the general public regarding requests for service and complaints within DOT right-of-way. Assists ARME with ensuring work requests are completed within established time frames. Reviews and approves requests for supplies and equipment for routine and special projects. Assists ARME and Foreman with local purchases as needed with assigned spending limits. Performs job related paperwork, including reviewing HMMS daily work reports, HMMS work requests, daily PM vehicle checklists, etc. Assists with planning and coordinating large‑scale maintenance projects for personnel and equipment needs, resurfacing, drainage problems, using engineering level for obtaining field notes and researching construction plans, tax maps, etc. Tracks crew accomplishments and ensures that crews meet the goals established by the business plan. Monitors section shed yard to ensure that employees of the various crews maintain cleanliness at equipment lay‑down and storage stall areas. Manages maintenance crews in emergency and inclement weather operations, may include being available for extended working hours or 12‑hour shifts. Supervises the set‑up of emergency detours according to the SCDOT Work Zone Traffic Control Manual and Field Guide to warn motorists. Performs other related duties as assigned.
Minimum And Additional Requirements
Five (5) years of related work experience; or an approved acceptable equivalence.
Special Requirement: A valid motor vehicle operator’s license is required.
Requires attainment of a Class A Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) within six (6) months of placement in the position.
Physical Requirement The physical demands for the essential functions of this position involve bending, stooping, reaching, twisting, climbing, balancing, kneeling, pushing, pulling, grasping, and physically manipulating objects of varying size, shape, weight, and material. Must be able to lift up to 50 lbs. This position requires walking for extended periods, traversing rough and uneven terrain, and working in close proximity to motoring traffic and natural environmental hazards. May be required to work outside of the normal work schedule, especially during inclement weather and/or other departmental‑related emergencies. Frequently exposed to the outside environment in all weather conditions, noise, and oil or grease on a daily basis.
